The Boston Red Sox are interested in trading for a shortstop, but San Diego Padres SS Jason Bartlett, who has a very attainable $5.5 million option for the 2013 season, would be too expensive. Boston is trying to stay under the luxury-tax threshold.

The San Diego Padres want to trade either SS Jason Bartlett or 2B Orlando Hudson. Bartlett, 32, is signed for $5.5 million next season with a $5.5 million option or $1.5 million buyout for 2013. Hudson, 33, is signed for $5.5 million with an $8 million club option or $2 million buyout for '13.
