Sun, 12 May 2013 10:22:55 -0700 In his first start since being activated from the disabled list, Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) allowed one run on six hits over 5 1/3 innings in a victory over the New York Mets Saturday, May 11, with two walks and nine strikeouts. Liriano threw 90 pitches and retired the first seven batters he faced.
Wed, 08 May 2013 12:45:34 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) is scheduled to make his team debut against the New York Mets Saturday, May 11. Liriano is healthy after fracturing his right arm in spring training, and he went 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA in five starts over 21 2/3 innings during his minor league rehab assignment. Liriano had 33 strikeouts and just four walks, and he credits a new, overhand delivery for his results. "My command with the fastball was very good. Last year, I had trouble locating my fastball. Now it's a lot better, I'm throwing it in and out," he said. Fantasy Tip: Liriano has been an extremely frustrating fantasy baseball commodity due to injuries and inconsistent pitching performances in the past. He's in a new environment and is healthy, though, and with a new delivery, you have to be intrigued with the possibilities, even in deep mixed formats. He's worth taking a chance on.
Thu, 02 May 2013 07:32:58 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) and SP Charlie Morton (elbow) could return May 11 and May 14, respectively.
Tue, 30 Apr 2013 13:02:10 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) struck out nine in six innings with Triple-A Indianapolis Tuesday, April 30. Sixty of his 82 pitches went for strikes, and he didn't walk a single hitter. Liriano struck out eight hitters in his first start with Indy last week. He's expected to throw 100 pitches in his third start for Indy Sunday, May 5, meaning he could join the team's rotation May 10. SP Jonathan Sanchez was designated for assignment Tuesday. Fantasy Tip: Liriano is a very realistic option to take Sanchez's place in the starting rotation, so you should start making plans to acquire him in NL-only leagues if you're desperate for starters. The lack of walks in his rehab outings is encouraging, and if he can keep that up in his return to the majors, he'll be worthy of adding in mixed formats, too.
Wed, 24 Apr 2013 18:02:13 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) is scheduled to throw 80 pitches in a rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis Thursday, April 25, 90 pitches Tuesday, April 30, and 100 pitches Sunday, May 5. He would be in line to start for the Pirates Friday, May 10 if there are no setbacks.
Sun, 21 Apr 2013 11:14:30 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) gave up four runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings in a rehab start for Double-A Altoona Saturday, April 20.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 11:35:16 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) will make a rehab start with Double-A Altoona Saturday, April 20, and he's expected to throw four innings or 65 pitches. Fantasy Tip: Liriano could be back in two weeks, but he doesn't have a rotation spot waiting for him unless Jeff Locke pitches himself out of a spot. Keep Liriano on your radar in NL-only formats if he has a spot waiting for him.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 11:27:41 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke, who allowed four runs and six hits while walking four and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 18, could stick around in the rotation even after SPs Jeff Karstens (shoulder) and Francisco Liriano (arm) return from their injuries. Fantasy Tip: Locke will have to pitch better than his effort last night to convince Clint Hurdle to keep him in the rotation. In Locke's defense, he was facing a red-hot Atlanta Braves squad. Only consider Locke in NL-only leagues, especially since he may be without a job in a few weeks.
Thu, 18 Apr 2013 18:18:06 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said SP Francisco Liriano (arm) likely will need to make three more rehab starts before joining the team.
Tue, 16 Apr 2013 10:43:10 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) tossed three shutout innings with Single-A Bradenton Monday, April 15, and he struck out six. Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on Liriano's progress. He should be making his way back up to the big leagues soon if he doesn't have any injury setbacks. Consider him an under-the-radar option in NL-only and very deep mixed leagues. His six strikeouts Monday are very encouraging.
