Twins | Francisco Liriano returning to starting rotation

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said P Francisco Liriano is returning to the starting rotation and will start against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, May 30. He will replace P Anthony Swarzak in the rotation, after he allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Detroit Tigers Friday, May 25. Liriano was 0-5 with a 9.45 ERA in six starts to open the season before he was demoted to the bullpen, where he allowed four earned runs over 7 1/3 innings during five relief appearances.

Minnesota Twins SP Francisco Liriano said he understands why he was moved to the bullpen and is frustrated with the start of his season. "It's been tough, to be honest," Liriano said. "Having the spring that I had and coming into the season then walking so many guys and getting behind in the count, it's kinda tough for me. It has been up and down but I gotta find a way to get back to pitching better."

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the team eventually wants SP Francisco Liriano to move back to the starting rotation after he gains some confidence. "Maybe a couple innings here, a couple innings there, he blows some people away and gets some kind of mojo going," Gardenhire said. "Then we see if we can get him back in there. We need him as a starter. We told him that."

The Minnesota Twins have moved SP Francisco Liriano to the bullpen. SP P.J. Walters, recalled from Triple-A Rochester Wednesday, May 9, will move into the rotation Saturday, May 12, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Minnesota Twins SP Anthony Swarzak might return to the starting rotation if the team elects to remove SP Francisco Liriano from starting duties. Swarzak worked two scoreless innings of relief, allowing a hit with three strikeouts. A change of some sort will be made once SP Nick Blackburn (shoulder) comes back this week.

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire indicated Sunday, April 22, that it doesn't appear that SP Francisco Liriano is pitching with a lot of confidence, and it appears the pitcher's spot in the rotation might be in some jeopardy. "We've said this over and over again, so we're going to step back to see what we need to do to try to get his confidence back and try to figure some things out with him," Gardenhire said. Liriano said he would be open to a move to the bullpen.
