Pirates | Francisco Liriano nets second win

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:50:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano picked up his first win since the opening game of the season Saturday, April 30, in a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He held the Reds to five hits and struck out six while walking none after allowing 17 walks in his first four starts.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano closed out April the same way he opened it, but there are a few caution flags. If Liriano walks this many batters in the next few starts he could hit a slump. Still, all it has cost Liriano is one loss and a couple of no-decisions, He remains a strong pitcher in fantasy circles.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano works on mechanics

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 14:58:15 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano is fully healed from his hamstring ailment and was focusing on his mechanics with pitching coach Ray Searage in his latest bullpen session. "He's got to make sure that he commits to his front side, that front arm, and he's got to keep his head on line," Searage said. "If he keeps his head on line all the way through and finishes the pitch, then he can pull off. But if he has that pull-off as he's coming down, it knocks off his timing and his release point."

Fantasy Tip: Aside from his first start of the year, Liriano has been shaky, allowing seven earned runs and walking nine in his last two outings. He may still not be 100% healthy, either, and a start on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend is a scary proposition. You may want to hold Liriano out until he returns to form and limits the free passes.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano to start Tuesday

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 12:49:23 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (hamstring) felt good during his bullpen session Saturday, April 16, and stated that he will make his next scheduled start versus the San Diego Padres Tuesday, April 19.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano has a favorable matchup against the Padres, who are ranked near the bottom of the league in most major offensive categories. The 32-year-old southpaw is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts, with nine walks and 13 strikeouts over 11 innings.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano talks hamstring

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 12:54:09 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (hamstring) said he is not concerned about his hamstring after he felt soreness during the final couple pitches of his recent bullpen session. Liriano added the injury will be approached in a day-to-day manner.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano is a viable mid-rotation arm for fantasy rosters with more value in deeper leagues. He has 13 strikeouts through 11 innings to start the season and a 3.25 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and a 9.6 K/9 over 88 career starts with the Pirates dating back to 2013. Liriano should be ready to return to the hill sooner than later, but you'll still want to stay tuned for updates.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano to miss start

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 15:08:59 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Ryan Vogelsong will start Wednesday, April 13, versus the Detroit Tigers. He's filling in for SP Francisco Liriano (hamstring), who has right hamstring discomfort and is being considered day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong will be making his first start as a Pirate in his second tenure with the club, but he's someone that should be avoided in just about all fantasy formats. Aside from his inconsistency, the 38-year-old will have an ultra-tough assignment, as Detroit currently sports one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball. As for Liriano, it looks like he'll be OK for his next start.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano fans 10 in opener

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 13:46:27 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano struck out 10 St. Louis Cardinals batters Sunday, April 3, in a 4-1 win.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano tied a team record for strikeouts in an opening start that he previously set in 2014. John Candelaria also did it in 1983. He is a surprisingly strong starter when it comes to openers, and Pittsburgh could have a solid 1-2 punch on its hands with Gerrit Cole and Liriano. Consider Liriano an SP1 in your lineup for the time being.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano to start opener

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 14:05:55 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano has been named the opening day starter.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano likely is receiving the first start because Gerrit Cole is just coming back from an injury. He is coming off a 2015 season where he recorded a 12-7 record with a 3.38 ERA and 205 strikeouts. Liriano should be a middle-round option in most mixed leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano wants 200 innings

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 11:12:14 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano's goal this year is to reach 200 innings. He previously has topped 185 innings in just two seasons. Liriano threw 186 2/3 frames in 2015. He turns 32 in October, so the Pirates have toned down his spring routine to give him some rest.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano may be getting older, but he still shows elite skills with swinging strikes and ground balls. He's been as consistent as they come in the ERA department, too. The one downside: shaky control. If you can bypass that fact, he makes for a solid No. 3 fantasy pitcher.

Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano to receive extra rest

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 17:03:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said SP Francisco Liriano will receive extra rest following his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, Sept. 19. He has thrown 167 innings over 28 starts this year, which is his highest total since he tossed 191 2/3 innings during the 2010 season.

Fantasy Tip: After facing the Dodgers, Liriano's ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) next outing will come against the Chicago Cubs Sept. 26, giving him six days' rest. He is a risky play in FantasyScore Saturday, with a 1-1 record and a 5.40 ERA over 13 1/3 innings during the month of September.
