Updating a previous report, Hall of Fame OF Tony Gwynn said he's ahead of schedule after a 14-hour procedure to remove a malignant tumor from his right cheek. Gwynn was talking and drinking water the morning after the procedure and feels great.

Hall of Fame OF Tony Gwynn underwent a 13-hour surgery to remove a new cancerous tumor inside his right cheek. Gwynn's wife, Alicia, doesn't believe the cancer spread outside of his salivary gland. Doctors were to perform a nerve graft in hopes of saving Gwynn's facial functions.

Padres | Tony Gwynn feeling better after cancer treatments

Former San Diego Padres OF Tony Gwynn has completed eight weeks of chemotherapy and cancer radiation treatments and is also rehabbing from a back problem, according to Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Everything is going great," Gwynn said. "I don't have an exact answer yet where I stand with the cancer. I can't say I'm cured. I have an MRI and a CT scan planned for sometime next week. But I feel good and my doctors tell me they think I'm ahead of schedule. And I've been walking on my own for about a month now." Gwynn, who had been using a walker to get around, plans to return to his coaching job at San Diego State University Jan. 20, and is also expected to rejoin the Padres as an analyst this season.

Padres | Tony Gwynn has parotid cancer

Former San Diego Padres OF Tony Gwynn will begin undergoing treatments soon for parotid cancer, according to Bill Center of The San Diego Union-Tribune. The cancer was first noticed last month and doctors feel it was discovered early enough where it can be treated. Gwynn is scheduled to have radiation treatments five times a week and weekly chemotherapy treatments for seven to eight weeks. He believes the cancer may be related to his use of chewing tobacco throughout his career. The 50-year-old Gwynn plans to continue serving as head coach of San Diego State University, his alma mater.
