Sun, 04 Oct 2009 12:13:17 -0400 Updating previous reports, Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin announced that manager Ken Macha would be returning in 2010 for the second year of his two-year contract, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. In addition, Melvin decided to add an option to Macha's contract for the 2011 season. "He didn't ask for (the option)," said Melvin. "He said, 'It doesn't matter to me. I don't do this job for security. I do it to win ball games.' The option tells him I do support him in his role as manager." Melvin also invited back bench coach Willie Randolph, hitting coach Dale Sveum, third base coach Brad Fischer and first base coach Ed Sedar.

"I think Willie did a good job. I think that the results the last, say, 14 months were not up to what we thought it had to be," Wilpon said. He rejected criticism that the team was unfair to Randolph because of the timing of the announcement to fire him. "The intent here clearly was to respect Willie, to respect his feelings and to do it in person," Wilpon said.

Randolph had spotted Manuel having a lengthy conversation on the field at Shea Stadium last week with Mets VP of player development Tony Bernazard, a known Randolph detractor. Randolph grew concerned Manuel was serving as a mole to the front office, and Randolph confronted Manuel, who denied any wrongdoing. Randolph's suspicions about Manuel widened after watching Manuel's introductory press conference to become interim manager, because Manuel was so explicit about the areas in which he would separate himself from Randolph.
