The candidates include minor league manager Wally Backman, third base coach Chip Hale, Ken Oberkfell, Bob Melvin, Terry Collins, Clint Hurdle, Lee Mazzilli, Pete Mackanin and Don Wakamatsu.

The Yankees would not confirm the report, which said the move would make Mattingly the favorite to replace manager Joe Torre when Torre leaves. Torre's contract expires after the 2007 season.

Mazzilli left the Yankees after the 2003 season to manage the Baltimore Orioles, but he was fired in August.

Sosa, who entered play in a 3-for-31 slump, said he had no problems with the move, which Mazzilli discussed with Sosa prior to the game.
