The New York Mets appear to have plenty of candidates to choose from for their managerial vacancy, according to the New York Daily News' Andy Martino. The candidates include minor league manager Wally Backman, third base coach Chip Hale, Ken Oberkfell, Bob Melvin, Terry Collins, Clint Hurdle, Lee Mazzilli, Pete Mackanin and Don Wakamatsu.

The Associated Press reports New York Yankees hitting coach Don Mattingly will become bench coach in 2007, replacing Lee Mazzilli, according to a report on Newsday's Web site. The Yankees would not confirm the report, which said the move would make Mattingly the favorite to replace manager Joe Torre when Torre leaves. Torre's contract expires after the 2007 season.

The Associated Press reports former New York Yankees first-base coach Lee Mazzilli is considered a candidate for the Yankees' vacant bench coach position. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner hadn't yet weighed in on the matter, but Yankees manager Joe Torre has indicated he would be in favor of bringing Mazzilli back to the Bombers. Mazzilli left the Yankees after the 2003 season to manage the Baltimore Orioles, but he was fired in August.

The Baltimore Sun's Roch Kubatko reports Baltimore Orioles SP Hayden Penn has allowed 12 runs and 15 hits in his past 5 2/3 innings but Baltimore Orioles MAN Lee Mazzilli said it was "too quick" to make a change. "You're asking a lot of the kid. He's 20 years old. He's shown that he has pretty good stuff. But let's face it, this is the big leagues up here, and when you're making mistakes up, you're going to pay for them," Mazzilli said.

David Ginsburg, of the Associated Press, reports Baltimore Orioles OF Sammy Sosa was moved down to sixth in the batting order Tuesday, June 28, by Orioles MAN Lee Mazzilli. Sosa, who entered play in a 3-for-31 slump, said he had no problems with the move, which Mazzilli discussed with Sosa prior to the game.
