"I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach," Baalke said. "In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things. But also having those backs be able to do enough things the same so you don't become so predictable on game day." RBs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James likely will see playing time this season. Fantasy Tip: All three running backs likely will receive playing time this season and could have fantasy value during the season. Gore likely will receive the majority of the carries and should be seen as a mid to weak No. 2 running back option. James and Hunter could be late-round fliers in drafts because of their expected roles on offense.

Gore, a fellow University of Miami alum, counseled Miller on lessons learned in the NFL. Miller said Tuesday, May 14, he is staying at 215 pounds, but adding more muscle mass. Fantasy Tip: Miller is viewed by some as having a leg up in the competition for the starting tailback job in Miami, although Daniel Thomas is not ready to go quietly. Whoever emerges as the top dog will be a low-end RB2 or flex fantasy option in most formats.

QB Colin Kaepernick threw for 302 yards, RB Frank Gore rushed for 100 yards, WR Michael Crabtree recorded 109 receiving yards and TE Vernon Davis recorded 104 receiving yards.

With first-and-goal from the Baltimore Ravens seven-yard-line, the 49ers handed off on first down to RB LaMichael James, who gained two yards, then ran three consecutive passing plays, on which QB Colin Kaepernick targeted WR Michael Crabtree. Gore was on the field for the final three plays, but said he wasn't second-guessing the play selection. Gore had 19 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown in the game. "That's why we've got coaches," Gore said. "Every player wants the ball at that time. But our coaches made the decision and we tried our best to make it happen."
