Saints | Injury Updates

Sat, 05 Jan 2002 10:44:29 -0800

The Advocate reports the New Orleans Saints defense may have a different look this weekend, as LB Keith Mitchell (foot), DT Norman Hand (foot) and DBs Kevin Mathis (neck), Fred Weary (knee) and Michael Hawthorne (back) are all unlikely to play. That would open the door for more playing time, and possible starts, for CBs Steve Israel and Tim Carter. As reported, LB Sedrick Hodge would start at linebacker if Mitchell can't play and Martin Chase and Kenny Smith would see more time on the defensive line due to Hand's continued problems.

Saints | CB Needed

Mon, 02 Apr 2001 01:23:13 -0700

The Biloxi Sun Herald reports with free agency period moving relatively slowly, the New Orleans Saints will now turn their attention to the NFL Draft. One area of need looks to be cornerback. After allowing Alex Molden to sign in San Diego, the team is down to four CBs. They are Kevin Mathis, Steve Israel, Fred Weary and Fred Thomas. Israel and Weary are coming off injuries and the fact that they are expected to recover does not rule out the Saints using their first-round pick in the draft, No. 23 overall, on a cornerback. The Saints are looking hard at the top cornerbacks available, a list that includes Mississippi State's Fred Smoot, Minnesota's Willie Middlebrooks, Mississippi's Ken Lucas, Wisconsin's Jamar Fletcher and Ohio State's Nate Clements.
