Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reports for the Sporting News the New Orleans Saints are not expected to re-sign free agent CB Fred Weary. Also, CB Steve Israel, a bust since signing a $4.5-million deal in 2000, is expected to be released. WR Albert Connell and his off-the-field issues are all but gone and as previously reported QB Jeff Blake is also expected to be released.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rick Venturi said his team's off-season priorities for the defense are to re-sign DE Joe Johnson and to find a replacement for CB Kevin Mathis in the event he can't come back from career-threatening neck and spinal injuries. DBs Michael Hawthorne and Steve Israel also have injury issues. GM Randy Mueller and coach Jim Haslett also must decide if free-agent DT La'Roi Glover and OLB Keith Mitchell fit into the team's plans. Venturi does not anticipate junking the 4-3 defense in favor of the 3-4.

The Advocate reports the New Orleans Saints defense may have a different look this weekend, as LB Keith Mitchell (foot), DT Norman Hand (foot) and DBs Kevin Mathis (neck), Fred Weary (knee) and Michael Hawthorne (back) are all unlikely to play. That would open the door for more playing time, and possible starts, for CBs Steve Israel and Tim Carter. As reported, LB Sedrick Hodge would start at linebacker if Mitchell can't play and Martin Chase and Kenny Smith would see more time on the defensive line due to Hand's continued problems.

Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reports for the Sporting News New Orleans Saints CB Kevin Mathis (cervical spine injury) will not play this weekend. CBs Fred Weary (bruised right knee) and Michael Hawthorne (sprained right foot) will be questionable for next week. Their injuries leave the team with only three healthy corners, Fred Thomas, Steve Israel and rookie Tim Carter. FB Terrelle Smith (strained back) will likely miss the season finale. The injury is not related to the disc problems that plagued Smith last season. DT Norman Hand (right foot sprain) also looks to be finished for the season.

Ricky Zeller reports for New Orleans Saints.com WR Joe Horn (rib), CBs Steve Israel (hamstring) and Kevin Mathis (knee) and DE Willie Whitehead all returned to practice on Monday. Mathis looked sure and nimble despite not practicing since July 31. "I think he will play this week," said coach Jim Haslett. "There's a good possibility he'll see some action." Mathis, Israel and Fred Weary took the majority of the reps at cornerback on Monday. DT Norman Hand (foot) and DE Darren Howard (bruised ribs) exercised on the sideline during practice.

The Times Picayune reports four New Orleans Saints players returned to practice on Thursday. DB Steve Israel, who missed almost all of camp with a pulled quadriceps, participated in full-team workouts. LB Brian Williams, who has been bothered by a jammed toe, returned to practice again on Thursday after missing Wednesday. Rookie OT Mitch White, whose left foot had been placed in a boot, returned, as did TE Boo Williams, who had injured a shoulder. DE Willie Whitehead (calf) was held out of practice.

CB Michael Hawthorne, filling in for Mathis as a starter, left practice just before it ended with an injury to his right hand or fingers. There was no report on the severity of the injury.

Steve Wiseman reports for the Sun Herald New Orleans Saints starting CB Kevin Mathis injured a ligament in his left knee during practice on Tuesday. Saints head coach Jim Haslett said Mathis will likely be out a minimum of two weeks. Mathis became tangled up with WR Anthony Collins during the scrimmage portion of the workout. When the two landed Collins kicked Mathis in the knee injuring his medial collateral ligament. With Mathis out, Haslett said Fred Weary, Michael Hawthorne and Steve Israel would all see an increase in their repetitions during practice.

Jeff Duncan, of the Times Picayune, reports for the Sporting News that New Orleans Saints CB Steve Israel's career with the New Orleans Saints may be coming to an end. Israel, who has suffered injury problems since joining the team, may need a strong showing in training camp to make the team. Due to the Saints desire for more depth and help at the corner position, they're going to give him every chance to show he's able to return to form.

The Times-Picayune's Jeff Duncan reports New Orleans Saints CB Fred Weary returned to workouts this week, seven months after he underwent reconstructive surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Weary, Fred Thomas, Kevin Mathis, Michael Hawthorne and Steve Israel are all vying for two of the starting cornerback spots on the roster. Weary, who is working behind Mathis at left cornerback, is able to run and cut on the injured leg but he is far from 100 percent. The big test for Weary will come soon - training camp in late July.

Steve Wiseman of the Sun Herald reports today's signing of S Jay Bellamy almost completes the starting defense for the New Orleans Saints. Bellamy will probably replace S Darren Perry, who remains a free agent, across from S Sammy Knight in the team's secondary. Kevin Mathis should start at one cornerback position while, pending an arrival in the NFL Draft, Steve Israel or Fred Weary should start at the other cornerback spot. The starting linebackers should be Darrin Smith, Keith Mitchell and Charlie Clemons. The Saints will have the same starting front four as last season DEs Joe Johnson and Darren Howard and DTs La'Roi Glover and Norman Hand. NFL sources said Bellamy's four-year contract was worth $4.4 million with a $600,000 signing bonus.

The Biloxi Sun Herald reports with free agency period moving relatively slowly, the New Orleans Saints will now turn their attention to the NFL Draft. One area of need looks to be cornerback. After allowing Alex Molden to sign in San Diego, the team is down to four CBs. They are Kevin Mathis, Steve Israel, Fred Weary and Fred Thomas. Israel and Weary are coming off injuries and the fact that they are expected to recover does not rule out the Saints using their first-round pick in the draft, No. 23 overall, on a cornerback. The Saints are looking hard at the top cornerbacks available, a list that includes Mississippi State's Fred Smoot, Minnesota's Willie Middlebrooks, Mississippi's Ken Lucas, Wisconsin's Jamar Fletcher and Ohio State's Nate Clements.

According to their official website, New Orleans Saints CB Steve Israel (leg, ankle) is making good progress in his recovery from last year's injuries. He had suffered a broken leg and ligament damage in his ankle but is hopeful at returning to 100 percent health this year and being able to contribute to the team.
