The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rick Venturi said his team's off-season priorities for the defense are to re-sign DE Joe Johnson and to find a replacement for CB Kevin Mathis in the event he can't come back from career-threatening neck and spinal injuries. DBs Michael Hawthorne and Steve Israel also have injury issues. GM Randy Mueller and coach Jim Haslett also must decide if free-agent DT La'Roi Glover and OLB Keith Mitchell fit into the team's plans. Venturi does not anticipate junking the 4-3 defense in favor of the 3-4.

The Advocate reports the New Orleans Saints defense may have a different look this weekend, as LB Keith Mitchell (foot), DT Norman Hand (foot) and DBs Kevin Mathis (neck), Fred Weary (knee) and Michael Hawthorne (back) are all unlikely to play. That would open the door for more playing time, and possible starts, for CBs Steve Israel and Tim Carter. As reported, LB Sedrick Hodge would start at linebacker if Mitchell can't play and Martin Chase and Kenny Smith would see more time on the defensive line due to Hand's continued problems.

Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reports for the Sporting News New Orleans Saints CB Kevin Mathis (cervical spine injury) will not play this weekend. CBs Fred Weary (bruised right knee) and Michael Hawthorne (sprained right foot) will be questionable for next week. Their injuries leave the team with only three healthy corners, Fred Thomas, Steve Israel and rookie Tim Carter. FB Terrelle Smith (strained back) will likely miss the season finale. The injury is not related to the disc problems that plagued Smith last season. DT Norman Hand (right foot sprain) also looks to be finished for the season.
