The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals C Mike Matheny spoke about being the first recipient of the Darryl Kile award – his late best friend. "To receive an award under any title is a great honor. But especially on this club with that title, to me, it's extremely special," said Matheny. "It's a topic that I haven't been good about opening up on. It's something near and dear to me to be mentioned in the same breath - let alone to have an award named after Darryl given to me. I know anybody would be extremely proud, but I don't think anybody could be prouder than I am."

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals C Mike Matheny will be the first recipient of the Darryl Kile Award. Sponsored by the St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers of America, voted upon by Matheny's teammates last year and named for the Cardinals right-hander Darryl Kile who died suddenly during the 2002 season, the award is given to a player who embodies the spirit, determination and professionalism offered by Kile before his abrupt death in June 2002. "I couldn't think of a more appropriate person than Mike to receive an award in Darryl's name. To me, that makes it perfect," Kile's widow, Flynn, said recently. "The qualities everyone noticed in Darryl… they're also so obvious in Mike. He and Darryl were alike in so many ways -- not just in the way they went about their profession, but also in how they treated and cared for their family."
