Phillies | Roy Halladay unlikely to start opening day

Tue, 19 Feb 2013 17:08:59 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Roy Halladay is not expected to be the team's opening day starter this year, as hitting coach Rich Dubee hinted the decision will likely come down to SPs Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee. "I think it's how we line up best," Dubee said. "Realistically, we could pitch anybody the first day as far as Doc, Cole and Cliff. On most staffs, they are No. 1 starters, so they all could pitch opening day. But part of what we're thinking is trying to split those two lefties. Last year we started with two lefties (after Halladay) and I'd just like to split them up." If Halladay doesn't start opening day, it would be the first time he didn't have the assignment since 2002.

It's the same program, and I'm looking forward to spring training and finally getting out of the cold," Hamels said.
