Rangers | Cole Hamels bags 11th victory

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 21:23:55 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels allowed one unearned run, five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a win Saturday, July 23, against the Kansas City Royals. He threw 63 of his 105 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels lowered his ERA to 2.87, third-best in the American League. He has been ridiculous on the road, going 8-1 with a 1.71 ERA in 11 road outings with 67 strikeouts over 73 2/3 innings. Regardless of venue, he is a must-have fantasy option.

Rangers | Cole Hamels dominant en route to 10th win

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 14:02:32 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels tossed an eight-inning gem against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, July 17, giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels struck out the first six batters he faced and cruised the rest of the way, needed only 91 pitches to rebound from a pair of duds to begin July in which he surrendered 10 runs and 15 hits in 8 1/3 frames. The former World Series MVP, who is sporting a 10-2 record, 3.00 ERA and 116 strikeouts over 120 innings after this outing, should be considered a very strong start in fantasy as he prepares to do battle with the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

Rangers | Cole Hamels treated for gash

Tue, 12 Jul 2016 20:38:35 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (chin) needed eight stitches in his chin after he tripped coming out of the bathroom in his hotel room in San Diego during the All-Star break. "Now I can sleep," Hamels said.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels was able to make an appearance in the All-Star Game, so the minor injury shouldn't be a concern for fantasy owners heading into the second half.

Rangers | Control issues for Cole Hamels

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 21:20:24 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels tied a career with six walks in a no-decision against the Minnesota Twins Friday, July 8. He allowed five runs on five hits while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels has lasted just 8 1/3 innings over his last two starts, allowing a combined 10 runs. He has been solid overall this year, but avoid him his next time out in DFS formats in case his slide continues.

Rangers | Cole Hamels struggles with cutter

Sun, 03 Jul 2016 17:17:13 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels said he struggled finding control of his cutter against the Minnesota Twins Sunday, July 3. He lost for the first time since May 27, allowing five runs on a season-high 10 hits while walking three and striking out three in a season-low four innings.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels has provided steady, strong results all season, so there is no reason to hit the panic button after one sloppy outing.

Rangers | Cole Hamels to be limited?

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 16:49:58 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels threw only 86 pitches in his win over the New York Yankees Tuesday, June 28, and manager Jeff Banister said the team is looking to limit the lefty where they can at the midway point in the season. Hamels is 4-0 with a 0.65 ERA in his last four starts, and he has been under 100 pitches his last three outings. He is fifth in the American League with 103 2/3 innings and ninth with an average of 102.1 pitches per game.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels has an excellent 2.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 8.9 K/9, but has he reached his peak in 2016? A .268 batting average on balls in play, 87.5% strand rate and 4.40 FIP suggest regression is ahead for the lefty, so this would certainly be a good time to consider selling high.

Rangers | Cole Hamels wins fourth straight start

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 19:47:42 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels completed a dazzling month over the New York Yankees on Tuesday, June 28, permitting six hits and a walk while fanning seven over as many innings. Hamels will end the month with a 4-0 record and a 1.51 ERA.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels hasn't given up more than one run in any of his last four outings and has struck out at least seven in three of them. The 2008 World Series MVP is a no-brainer start in fantasy and is slated to face the major-league worst Minnesota Twins twice before the All-Star break, so owners can continue to feel pretty confident in this southpaw.

Yankees | Brian McCann not starting Tuesday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:21:25 -0700

New York Yankees C Brian McCann is not in the lineup Tuesday, June 28, against the Texas Rangers. McCann is replaced by C Austin Romine, who will bat ninth against Rangers SP Cole Hamels.

Fantasy Tip: McCann, a lefty, is sitting on the bench because Hamels is a lefty as well. Sit McCann on your bench if you can. As for Romine, he is worth a start in daily leagues because of his five hits, two doubles, and seven runs batted in over the last seven games.

Yankees | Brett Gardner not starting Tuesday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:11:02 -0700

New York Yankees OF Brett Gardner is out of the starting lineup Tuesday, June 28, against the Texas Rangers. OF Aaron Hicks is in left field and will hit eighth against Rangers SP Cole Hamels.

Fantasy Tip: This is a traditional lefty vs. lefty absence, so Gardner should be back in the lineup the next time a righty pitches. Hicks (.212-3-15) carries no fantasy value.

Rangers | Cole Hamels has struggled in Bronx

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:35:11 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels is taking an eight-game road winning streak into his start against the New York Yankees Tuesday, June 28, but he's gone 0-3 with a 5.64 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees, with two coming in New York.

Fantasy Tip: Ignore Hamels' past history against the Yanks in a small sample size. He's sporting an ERA of 2.79, WHIP of 1.22 and is fanning 8.8 hitters per nine innings in 15 starts. Plus, the Yankees are dead last in the AL with an OPS of .700 against lefty pitchers in 2016.
