Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) threw 27 pitches at about 70 percent during a bullpen session Sunday, March 16, and was satisfied with the results. He is expected to throw another bullpen session Wednesday, March 19, and could throw batting practice several days later, if all goes well.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) is feeling "really good" two days after his last bullpen session, but he's moving very slow in his recovery from shoulder tendonitis and fatigue. Hamels said he'll throw another bullpen Sunday, March 16, and he could throw around 40 pitches in that session. However, Hamels isn't throwing at full intensity yet. "Hopefully in a couple bullpens I'll be at 75 percent and I can let it go 80. And then you get in games, you're more 80 to 90 percent. And then during the season it's all gears going and you're able to reach that 100 percent mark." Hamels will open on the disabled list, and there's no timetable for when he'll make his season debut.
Fantasy Tip: With the way Hamels is slowly recovering and not rushing himself, it might not be until May before we see him throw his first pitch this season. He remains a decent selection as a second starter, though, as long as you plan around it in April.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) is scheduled for his next bullpen session Friday, March 14, or Saturday, March 15, but it all depends on how he feels Thursday, March 13. There is a chance he could pitch in a spring game later this month. Hamels is unlikely to pitch in a regular season game in April, but the team isn't ruling it out. He continues to say that he has no pain or structural damage in his left shoulder, and he hasn't been sent for an MRI exam.
Fantasy Tip: The fact that he hasn't had any tests on his arm and he's back to throwing already are definitely good signs that he'll avoid a long-term absence in the rotation. Sure, there are reasons to be skeptical, but Hamels' draft placement now could make him a nice steal.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) threw a 20-minute bullpen session Wednesday, March 12. Pitching coach Bob McClure told reporters it went well and that Hamels was "free and easy. I'm excited." Hamels said he felt good and is back on schedule. It's still early in his process to getting back to big-league action, though.
Fantasy Tip: It's a positive step that could mean Hamels pitches in regulation action sometime in April. If his ADP is dropping in drafts, you could land him at a fine value, especially if he's your second mixed SP. He's not out of the woods yet, but he's seeing fewer trees in his way.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) could see Grapefruit League action within two weeks if all goes well in his throwing session Wednesday, March 12. He probably will not be active for at least the first two weeks of the regular season.
Fantasy Tip: Philadelphia doesn't need a fifth starter until April 13, so if Hamels can return somewhere in that time frame, he can minimize the damage he'll do to those who'll make him one of their top fantasy arms, if not their No. 1. Stay tuned.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) suffered a setback and said he doesn't have pain in his left shoulder, but he is fatigued. Hamels downplayed it and said he doesn't have an MRI scheduled, but he pushed himself too hard, too quickly. He wouldn't say if he could pitch in April.
Fantasy Tip: Hamels' stock should fall a bit now with the uncertainty that he can pitch in the first month of the season. He has quite a few innings logged on his 30-year-old arm. For someone that doesn't throw particularly hard, any loss of velocity or arm strength could be a big factor. Expect him to take a more conservative approach and begin the season on the disabled list. If this means you can land him at a reduced rate, go for it. Arm strength can be rebuilt, and the absence of pain gives a brighter outlook.
