Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) is scheduled for his next bullpen session Friday, March 14, or Saturday, March 15, but it all depends on how he feels Thursday, March 13. There is a chance he could pitch in a spring game later this month. Hamels is unlikely to pitch in a regular season game in April, but the team isn't ruling it out. He continues to say that he has no pain or structural damage in his left shoulder, and he hasn't been sent for an MRI exam.
Fantasy Tip: The fact that he hasn't had any tests on his arm and he's back to throwing already are definitely good signs that he'll avoid a long-term absence in the rotation. Sure, there are reasons to be skeptical, but Hamels' draft placement now could make him a nice steal.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) threw a 20-minute bullpen session Wednesday, March 12. Pitching coach Bob McClure told reporters it went well and that Hamels was "free and easy. I'm excited." Hamels said he felt good and is back on schedule. It's still early in his process to getting back to big-league action, though.
Fantasy Tip: It's a positive step that could mean Hamels pitches in regulation action sometime in April. If his ADP is dropping in drafts, you could land him at a fine value, especially if he's your second mixed SP. He's not out of the woods yet, but he's seeing fewer trees in his way.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) could see Grapefruit League action within two weeks if all goes well in his throwing session Wednesday, March 12. He probably will not be active for at least the first two weeks of the regular season.
Fantasy Tip: Philadelphia doesn't need a fifth starter until April 13, so if Hamels can return somewhere in that time frame, he can minimize the damage he'll do to those who'll make him one of their top fantasy arms, if not their No. 1. Stay tuned.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) suffered a setback and said he doesn't have pain in his left shoulder, but he is fatigued. Hamels downplayed it and said he doesn't have an MRI scheduled, but he pushed himself too hard, too quickly. He wouldn't say if he could pitch in April.
Fantasy Tip: Hamels' stock should fall a bit now with the uncertainty that he can pitch in the first month of the season. He has quite a few innings logged on his 30-year-old arm. For someone that doesn't throw particularly hard, any loss of velocity or arm strength could be a big factor. Expect him to take a more conservative approach and begin the season on the disabled list. If this means you can land him at a reduced rate, go for it. Arm strength can be rebuilt, and the absence of pain gives a brighter outlook.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) threw off a mound for the first time this spring Wednesday, Feb. 26, and pitching coach Bob McClure doesn't expect Hamels to miss more than his first two starts of the season, barring a setback. "Health-wise, he doesn't look like he needs longer, but I don't want to rush him. To be conservative, I would say two weeks. To be not conservative, I'd say (he could be ready) five to seven days into the season," McClure said. Hamels made 35 throws at minimal effort without pain, and he won't mix curveballs in until later this spring. He'll throw two more bullpens over the next few days and then graduate to live batting practice.
Fantasy Tip: This could be a blessing in disguise for Hamels in terms of the big picture in 2014. Missing a few starts shouldn't drastically affect his draft value.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) will throw off a mound for the first time this spring Wednesday, Feb. 26. Hamels said he is feeling really good. He threw a side session Sunday, Feb. 23, and looked healthy and strong. Hamels is confident he'll be with the team sometime in April.
Fantasy Tip: If Hamels can avoid any more setbacks, he may be ready for the start of the regular season. At worst, he may miss a start or two. He shouldn't be dropped drastically in your rankings.
