Cardinals | GM not optimistic about Adam Wainwright

Sun, 26 Apr 2015 11:55:23 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said he believes SP Adam Wainwright (Achilles') will not pitch again this season, although the club wants to wait for the results of the MRI exam Monday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should continue to monitor this situation given the seriousness of Wainwright's injury. For the time being, seasonal owners should not make any hasty roster decisions until an official announcement of his injury status and return timetable has been established. Lance Lynn ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) is expected to assume the role of the team's ace and is a solid option on FantasyScore in most matchups.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright placed on DL

Sun, 26 Apr 2015 08:10:09 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (ankle, Achilles') was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, April 26, because of a low ankle and Achilles' tendon injury.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor this situation since there have been reports that Wainwright will miss the rest of the season. Lance Lynn ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) likely will become the ace of the staff if Wainwright is ruled out and would be a solid option on FantasyScore against most teams.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright out for the season?

Sun, 26 Apr 2015 06:34:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (Achilles') is expected to be finished for the season due to an Achilles' injury, according to sources. Wainwright has yet to undergo an MRI, though.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will want to wait for an official announcement, but this obviously is horrible news for Wainwright. Continue to check back for updates and don't make any hasty roster moves without confirmation of his injury status and return timetable. The obvious candidate to join the rotation is top-prospect Marco Gonzales, but he is currently on minor league disabled list. Expect more news to develop after Wainwright's MRI Monday, April 27.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright injures ankle

Sat, 25 Apr 2015 18:14:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (ankle) exited his start against the Milwaukee Brewers with a left ankle injury Saturday, April 25, and will be re-evaluated when the team returns to St. Louis.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) threw four scoreless innings prior to exiting, lowering his ERA to 1.44. He has been a stud at FantasyScore in 2015, but stay tuned for updates on the severity of his injury.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright tapped for opener

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 13:25:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright will start the season opener Sunday, April 5, against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) only pitched a handful of innings due to abdominal issues, but it looks like he's over those at the moment. He's still an elite pitcher worth drafting in all formats. Against the Chicago Cubs opening night this Sunday, Wainwright isn't a terrible option, but it might be best to play it safe and avoid him, especially if he's held to a pitch limit.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright impressive in debut

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 11:13:53 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) tossed four scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, March 21. He allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three.

Fantasy Tip: While it's encouraging to see Wainwright starting strong, he should be viewed as a slightly risky No. 1 starting option this season based on the high number of innings he has thrown over the last few years.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright to debut Saturday

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 07:41:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) will make his spring training debut Saturday, March 21.

Fantasy Tip: Some veterans are making their first start this week to save on innings, so Waino really isn't that far behind. He has time to be ready for the first week of the season. The concern is that Wainwright is 33 and coming off an elbow cleanup. He has thrown a ton of innings the past two seasons with deep playoff runs, so he's a risky SP1.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright throws sim game

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 10:06:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) tossed a 50-pitch simulated game to mainly minor leaguers and OF Jon Jay Monday, March 16, and he mixed in all his pitches. Wainwright said he's ready to pitch in a real spring game next. He'll have time to make three starts before the team's season opener against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright hasn't had any setbacks at all since initially being diagnosed with an abdominal strain. That's good news, and he should be ready for opening day if everything plays out according to plan. Consider Wainwright a low-tier fantasy ace for your fake pitching staff.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright will pitch Monday

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 06:33:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) will pitch a simulated game Monday, March 16.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright continues to make positive strides toward being ready for the regular season, however it is worth checking back for updates as the spring progresses. The 34-year-old righty has thrown 468 2/3 innings over the past two seasons, so his heavy workload and preseason injury are minor concerns. Still, he has been a dominant starter and fantasy ace the past two seasons and the two seasons before his Tommy John surgery in 2011. Consider Wainwright a low-end No. 1 starter.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright throws Thursday

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 10:03:00 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) threw two simulated innings Thursday, March 12, and he thinks there is more than enough time for him to be ready for the season opener. Wainwright continues to build strength and go through his progression of pitches. He has yet to run at full speed and has been doing limited fielding exercises. He expects to gain clearance to increase the intensity in workouts in the next few days. Wainwright looks to be itching to pitch in his first spring game this year.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Wainwright doesn't have any setbacks with his abdominal strain once he moves to spring starts, he should be ready in early April, if not on opening day against the Chicago Cubs. That should keep him in fantasy ace territory on draft day.
