Cardinals | Adam Wainwright throws bullpen

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 09:57:40 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) was encouraged with his high-intensity bullpen session Thursday, March 5, and he's expected to throw live batting practice Sunday, March 8.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright looks to be progressing well from his abdominal injury, and if he proceeds at this pace, there's a good chance he could be ready to pitch on opening day against the Chicago Cubs. Unless he suffers another setback, Wainwright should remain on the edge of fantasy ace consideration.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright to throw again

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 12:31:05 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, March 5. Wainwright is still restricted from running and fielding drills because of the injury.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright appears to be taking things slow while he works his way back from the injury. It is not known if he will pitch in a spring training game, but he should be ready for the regular season if he does not have any setbacks. Wainwright probably should be seen as a No. 2 starting pitcher in most mixed leagues.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright throws Monday

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 12:37:07 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) threw 41 pitches during a bullpen session Monday, March 2, and said he is where he wants to be physically. He is still limited in running and agility drills because of the injury and may not pitch in a spring training game for another two to three weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright likely will take things slow to make sure he is ready for the regular season. Owners should continue to monitor the situation during the spring to see if he has any setbacks. Wainwright probably is a No. 2 starting pitcher in mixed leagues if he is ready for opening day.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwrights' availability in doubt?

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 09:45:58 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) won't pitch in spring games until mid-March due to an abdominal strain, which could put his availability for the season opener April 5 against the Chicago Cubs in question. Manager Mike Matheny is open to pushing Wainwright's season debut back a couple of days if the prescribed rest doesn't work. Wainwright will be evaluated early next week.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright is currently teetering on the edge of fantasy ace utility, and there remains concern about how he'll bounce back from elbow surgery, too. If he doesn't suffer anymore setbacks this spring, there's a good chance he'll be ready to pitch the first week of the season.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright can continue throwing

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:08:46 -0800

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) will be cleared to continue throwing while he allows his abdominal area to heal from a slight strain that should allow him to be ready for the season opener April 5. The Cardinals, however, will have Wainwright "take it slow for about four or five days." He will wait some time to return to the mound, though. The Cardinals ideally would like Wainwright to make four Grapefruit League starts.

Fantasy Tip: This is the best possible news Waino could have received, really. Nothing much will change in the short term. Keep an eye on his progress, though, as any minor setback to his throwing program could make him iffy for the regular season.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright prescribed rest

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 10:03:04 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) is dealing with an abdominal strain, and rest has been prescribed as the treatment, according to general manager John Mozeliak.

Fantasy Tip: That's good news for Waino, since he was already going to be held back a bit from throwing in spring training. However, he's teetering at the bottom of the fantasy ace tier currently, so any more setbacks this spring would likely bump him out of that spot and make him questionable to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright's tests precautionary

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 09:09:03 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) said his trip to meet with doctors about his lower abdominal pain is "strictly precautionary." He said he first felt the pain Monday, Feb. 23, while lifting weights, but he's pain-free when he throws. The pain only happens when he lunges or runs. "What I've been told is that there's a very high possibility that we are going to get up there and go, 'All right, just lay low for another couple of days and we're good,'" Wainwright said.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Wainwright's injury is believed to be serious, we won't know for sure until doctors take a look at it. There should still be some valid concern about Wainwright's ability to be ready by opening day because of the fact that he was already going to be held back from throwing because of heavy workloads in recent years. Right now, he's on the edge of the talk for a fantasy ace. One more setback would drop him down a tier and make him that much more risky as the head of your fantasy pitching staff.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright has abdominal pain

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 11:12:58 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) is dealing with abdominal pain, and he'll return to St. Louis to visit with a specialist Thursday, Feb. 26. The Cardinals are expecting to know a treatment plan and how much time he'll miss Thursday. Wainwright was already on a delayed throwing program. "It shouldn't affect him at that point, or any more beyond that point," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I would say (the level of concern) is a medium at this point." Wainwright pointed out that he hasn't had pain or soreness in his arm and hasn't felt abdominal pain while throwing.

Fantasy Tip: The results of Wainwright's examination Thursday will be very important for his fantasy baseball value in drafts this spring. If he's forced to miss more time that will set back his throwing program, there's a chance he won't be ready for opening day in April. If that's the case, Wainwright could fall out of fantasy ace territory.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright's workload to be limited

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 09:14:00 -0800

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright will have his workload limited this spring and possibility into the regular season after averaging 222 innings in the last three years. Wainwright had surgery to remove torn cartilage in his right elbow in the offseason, and manager Mike Matheny said the biggest change might be the number of starts Wainwright gets this spring. Wainwright made five starts last spring. Wainwright said he'd probably be ready for the season after four starts, but he was unsure how sharp he'd be if he had any less.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright's elbow surgery and heavy usage in recent seasons is definitely concerning to fantasy baseball owners. However, if his recovery from the surgery goes well this spring, he should remain in fantasy ace territory.
