Red Sox | Jonny Gomes remains in game

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 20:49:09 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Jonny Gomes (nose) was struck in the nose by a ball on a deflection off the Green Monster in the seventh inning Wednesday, July 9, against the Chicago White Sox. He remained in the game, but spent the rest of the half-inning plugging his nose with his undershirt, apparently to keep it from bleeding.

Wed, 02 Jul 2014 15:12:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox SS Stephen Drew and OF Jackie Bradley Jr. are both sitting out Wednesday, July 2, with the team facing a left-handed pitcher. OF Mookie Betts is starting in center and OF Jonny Gomes is in left. SS Jonathan Herrera is at shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure Drew and Bradley are out of your lineups.

Red Sox | Much of roster could be subject to trades

Mon, 16 Jun 2014 23:48:25 -0700

Two-thirds of the Boston Red Sox lineup could be trade bait if the decision is made to junk the season and retool for 2015. Players mentioned for possible trades included CL Koji Uehara, C A.J. Pierzynski, OF David Ross, SS Stephen Drew, SP Jake Peavy and OF Jonny Gomes.

Red Sox | Grady Sizemore, Jonny Gomes could platoon

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:37:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said he can envision a platoon between OFs Grady Sizemore and Jonny Gomes in left field.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't come as a surprise. Sizemore has cooled off since an initial hot start, and the Red Sox would like to keep the oft-injured Sizemore fresh through the long haul. It'll drop his value significantly in mixed leagues .

Red Sox | Outfielders struggling

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 11:00:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Grady Sizemore is hitless in his last 13 at-bats to drop his average to .213. He has just one extra-base hit in his last 11 games, in which he's hitting .128 (5-for-39). OF Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitting .229 and has struck out once every three at-bats this year. OF Jonny Gomes is hitting .213 and has 19 strikeouts in 47 at-bats. OF Mike Carp is hitting .250 in 24 at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: With Shane Victorino (hamstring) set to return this week, expect John Farrell to use the extra body as a way to mix and match his outfielders in order to give them some rest. Bradley and Sizemore figure to remain as regulars, but their playing time may fluctuate more frequently when Victorino is back.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino making progress

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 13:47:00 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) took batting practice and did some running Friday, April 11, and said he would need only two to three rehab games to get his timing back down before returning.

Fantasy Tip: Victorino could be back relatively quickly, and Jonny Gomes and Daniel Nava figure to be the losers if John Farrell wants to keep both Grady Sizemore and Jackie Bradley Jr. in the lineup together.

Red Sox | Jackie Bradley could earn CF job

Thu, 10 Apr 2014 17:17:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Grady Sizemore is making his first ever start in left field Thursday, April 10, with OF Jackie Bradley Jr. getting the nod in center. Manager John Farrell isn't committing this arraignment permanently, since the team likes to get OF Jonny Gomes some playing time in left field. How well Bradley continues to play might determine how often Farrell deploys this alignment. Bradley has a slash line of .400/.478/.978 this year and is 6-for-12 with two doubles, four runs, four RBIs and three walks in the last four games. Sizemore has had some defensive lapses lately. If the Red Sox continue to start Sizemore and Bradley when OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) returns, it could mean a loss of playing time for Gomes and OF Daniel Nava, who has had a slow start to the season.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley should be owned in all leagues now that he's gotten his opportunity this year and is running with it. Sizemore's defensive shortcomings in center will help Bradley's cause.

Red Sox | Sticking with committee approach at leadoff

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 14:08:35 -0700

The Boston Red Sox will continue to approach their leadoff spot in a committee approach. OFs Jonny Gomes and Daniel Nava are likely to continue switching off at the top of the order, and OF Grady Sizemore could also see some time there. Nava is hitting only .138 (4-for-29) with a .219 on-base percentage, and manager John Farrell said he prefers to keep 2B Dustin Pedroia in the No. 2 spot.
