Marlins | Adam Conley making his case

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 10:23:27 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley is making a case to be the team's fourth starter, and he's impressed manager Don Mattingly this spring. SPs Jarred Cosart, Justin Nicolino, Jose Urena, Edwin Jackson and David Phelps are fighting for the final rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: It took Conley a while to get going after tendonitis issues stemming from 2014, but he's not a bad end-game target in really deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats if he wins a rotation spot.

Marlins | Edwin Jackson feels he can start

Sat, 27 Feb 2016 19:16:55 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Edwin Jackson has hit sights set on the No. 5 job in the rotation. He was used exclusively from the bullpen with the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs last season, but he still feels he can be an effective starting pitcher. "I still look at myself as a starter," Jackson said. "There's still something I want to prove to myself, not to anyone else."

Fantasy Tip: Jackson is expected to compete with Adam Conley, Justin Nicolino and David Phelps for the job. The veteran was a disaster in the rotation in recent seasons, with the opposition hitting .281 and .302 against him in 2013 and 2014 as a starter. Even if he wins a starting job, fantasy owners will want to tread lightly.

Marlins | Plenty of contenders for Miami rotation

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 22:13:02 -0800

Miami Marlins SPs Adam Conley, Edwin Jackson, Justin Nicolino and David Phelps are among the candidates battling for the final two rotations spots in spring training. Internally many believe Nicolino has the higher ceiling. SPs Kendry Flores, Brad Hand and Jose Urena are considered long shots at this point.

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the No. 4 and 5 job has little appeal in mixed fantasy formats, but with a healthy lineup providing run support they wouldn't be bad fantasy options in most NL-only formats.

Marlins | Edwin Jackson signs with Marlins

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 07:08:52 -0800

Free-agent RP Edwin Jackson (Braves) signed a one-year, $507,500 contract with the Miami Marlins Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson served in a relief role last year, but he could come to camp with a shot at a rotation spot. If so, he could be worth a last-round flyer in drafts.

Marlins | Miami interested in Edwin Jackson

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 17:33:38 -0800

The Miami Marlins have had internal discussions about free-agent SP Edwin Jackson (Braves).

Fantasy Tip: Jackson went 4-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 48 relief appearances last year with the Braves and the Cubs, after spending the majority of his career as a starting pitcher. He struggled mightily during his last season as a starter, posting a 6-15 record and 6.33 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) with the Cubs in 2014. Jackson is nothing more than a late-round flier in single-universe leagues.

Braves | Manny Banuelos' season likely over

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 15:17:06 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) will have his sore pitching elbow looked at by Dr. James Andrews again next week. Andrews performed Tommy John surgery on Banuelos back in 2012. Banuelos will be scratched from his start Friday, Sept. 11, against the New York Mets. Atlanta is cautiously optimistic that he doesn't have anything more serious than a bone chip and that he won't need surgery, but he's still likely to be shut down for the rest of the year as a precaution, regardless of what Andrews says next week. SP Matt Wisler is the leading candidate to take Banuelos' rotation spot and start Friday against the Mets. Ps Edwin Jackson and Sugar Ray Marimon are other possibilities, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Banuelos said he had been pitching with pain in his elbow for some time but that it wasn't anything serious.

Fantasy Tip: You can now drop Banuelos in any league that you still owned him. Wisler ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) isn't recommended for a start in your lineup on FantasyScore if he gets the nod against the Mets, who have been one of the hotter offensive clubs in the second half.

Braves | Edwin Jackson could start Wednesday

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 14:28:50 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Edwin Jackson could start against the Miami Marlins Wednesday, Sept. 2, if he does not appear in the game Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) hasn't made a start all season, so it is unlikely he'll return much for fantasy players in any format. Still, it is an intriguing matchup. FantasyScore players can fade Jackson confidently, but owners in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues could take on the risk. Just make sure he doesn't pitch Tuesday, and he is confirmed as the starter for Wednesday.

Braves | Edwin Jackson to pitch in relief

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 10:31:38 -0700

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said recently-signed P Edwin Jackson will pitch out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Friday, Aug. 14, Atlanta relievers had posted the third-worst ERA (4.24) in the majors this year. Jackson posted a 3.19 ERA in 23 games as a reliever prior to getting released by the Cubs, following a disastrous beginning to the season as a starter. He has no FantasyScore value as long as he is pitching out of the bullpen.

Cubs | Rafael Soriano coming aboard

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 07:14:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Rafael Soriano will be called up Monday, July 20, from Class AAA Iowa. SP Edwin Jackson was designated for assignment. Jackson is in the third year of a four-year, $52 million contract.

Fantasy Tip: Soriano could figure into the closing mix soon and is worth grabbing in NL-only leagues and watching in mixed leagues.

Cubs | Tsuyoshi Wada in danger of losing spot?

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 10:25:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Tsuyoshi Wada could be in danger of losing his spot in the starting rotation after being beaten up by the Washington Nationals in just 3 2/3 innings Friday, June 5, although manager Joe Maddon said he's not ready to make a change just yet. Ps Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson are candidates from the bullpen that could shift to a starting post. Wood has given up two runs in 6 1/3 innings since moving to the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Wada ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is obviously a weak FantasyScore option if he remains in the rotation, and he doesn't have much strikeout upside. Neither does Wood if he were to return to a starting role. None of Chicago's options to fill out the backside of the rotation should be owned in shallow mixed leagues.
