Sat, 08 Jun 2013 18:32:10 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RPs Sean Burnett (elbow) and Ryan Madson (elbow) have been throwing on flat ground, but the team does not know when either pitcher will be able to throw off a mound.

Angels | Ryan Madson throws

Mon, 03 Jun 2013 16:49:04 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) played catch Monday, June 3, but isn't ready to throw a bullpen session yet.

Fantasy Tip: Madson basically had to restart his program after having several setbacks in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The bottom line is we expect Ernesto Frieri to be save for at least another month's worth of save opps as Madson works his way back to full health.

Angels | Ryan Madson resumes playing catch

Fri, 31 May 2013 17:33:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) said he resumed playing catch Thursday, May 30, and he felt even better playing catch Friday, May 31. Madson recently had a setback in his recovery.

Fantasy Tip: Madson is slowly making his way back from Tommy John surgery. It appears he will still be able to return sometime in June, but that is anything but a certainty at this point. If you're in an AL-only fantasy leagues and desperate for saves, he is worth stashing away. However, it might still be a while before he returns and is effective, so hold off in all other formats.

Angels | Ryan Madson has another setback

Wed, 22 May 2013 13:11:41 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) has had another setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Madson felt soreness in his arm, which required him to stop throwing. He hopes to resume his rehab next week, but there is no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Madson had a pretty minor setback with his elbow already, but it's pretty vague as to the severity of this latest setback. Regardless, it gives Ernesto Frieri more rope as the incumbent closer. The Angels will probably give Madson more time to prove he's healthy in non-save situations when he returns, too. If you already own Madson, sit tight.

Angels | Jered Weaver, Ryan Madson rehabbing

Tue, 14 May 2013 16:34:35 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (elbow) and RP Ryan Madson (elbow) are continuing their rehab and are close to rejoining the team. Manager Mike Scioscia said Weaver will need at least two more rehab outings starting next week. Madson will need at least one more appearance either Wednesday, May 15, or Thursday, May 16.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver threw an 80-pitch bullpen session today, which is very encouraging. His injury is to his non-throwing elbow, so he's just focusing on building strength in his pitching arm. If you're desperate for saves, it's not a bad idea to grab Madson if he's on your waiver wire, even though he'll initially serve as Ernesto Frieri's setup man.

Angels | Ryan Madson makes appearance

Tue, 14 May 2013 06:27:53 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) had a perfect inning with a strikeout at Class A Inland Empire Monday, May 13. He's expected to pitch again Wednesday, May 15. His fastball was in the 91-92 mph range. Madson said he thinks his velocity will get better in time.

Fantasy Tip: It's a little early to be concerned with his velocity, but it does take some pitchers some time to regain their fastball zip after Tommy John surgery. Madson is the type of pitcher that doesn't need 95 mph-plus heat because of his devastating changeup. We'd be more aware of his control than his velocity at this point.

Angels | Ryan Madson could return soon

Sun, 12 May 2013 13:16:24 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance for Single-A Inland Empire Monday, May 13, and could come off the disabled list after that appearance.

Fantasy Tip: Madson will not be used as the closer when he initially comes off the disabled list but should be valuable in all leagues. Madson likely would get the chance to close games if Ernesto Frieri struggles at some point.

Angels | Ryan Madson throws sim game

Thu, 09 May 2013 15:42:45 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) threw a 21-pitch simulated game Thursday, May 9, and he didn't have any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Madson will likely have a few outings at extended spring training in Arizona before going on a short rehab assignment. He won't close immediately for the Halos, but he needs to be owned in all leagues right now since he's close to returning.

Angels | Ryan Madson headed to extended spring training

Wed, 08 May 2013 14:22:20 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) will head to extended spring training, where he'll likely need two to three outings before being activated from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Madson should be owned in all leagues, even though he won't be closing games out initially when he makes his debut with the team. That job still belongs to Ernesto Frieri, but if you own him, hopefully you have Madson, or others, to replace him eventually.
