Sat, 24 Mar 2012 11:20:09 -0700 Updating previous reports, Cincinnati Reds RP Ryan Madson (elbow) will need to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, according to multiple sources. He is expected to miss the entire season. As a result of Madson's injury, RP Sean Marshall will likely serve as the Reds' closer and P Aroldis Chapman will head from the starting rotation back to the bullpen. Fantasy Tip: Marshall, who is available in a wide range of leagues, should be grabbed immediately; he's expected to do the bulk of closing now that Madson is done for the season. Marshall was one of baseball's better setup men with the Chicago Cubs, and he's lights out against lefty batters. He's also tough on right-handers, too, and his peripherals suggest he'll be successful in the closer's role. Chapman becomes a little more intriguing now that he won't be making the move to the rotation. His spotty command makes him a gamble in any role, but perhaps the move back to the pen will settle him down. Chapman, along with Nick Masset, should be considered in deeper mixed formats and NL-only setups.

The team is still not revealing the nature of Madson's setback. "Nothing yet," manager Dusty Baker said Friday, March 23. "(He) won't be analyzed until tomorrow. He went back to Cincinnati. We won't know anything until tomorrow."
