The Baltimore Sun reports that the next meeting for RB Lawrence Phillips will be with Ravens head coach Brian Billick later today in Atlanta. If the meeting goes well Phillips is then expected to be brought to Baltimore next week to meet with senior team officials. "If Brian feels we should pursue this further, then we'll have Lawrence in for a meeting with several members of the front office soon," VP Ozzie Newsome said. "But again, we're just in the initial phase." The article speculates that even the mild interest in Phillips indicates that the team may not be sold on Priest Holmes as the primary RB although Billick says no. "This is very similar to what we're doing at the wide receiver position," Billick said. "We know the situation, but we brought in players like Webster Slaughter, Qadry Ismail and Billy Davis. It doesn't mean we're out to necessarily replace a player or saying we're devoid at that position. But the name of the game in this league is to get better." The team would reportedly look to give Phillips a contract for the veteran's minimum ($400,000) loaded with incentives.
Sat, 08 May 1999 11:15:00 -0700
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Ravens are hoping to see some improvement, especially from their WRs at their upcoming five-day passing camp which begins May 17th. Coach Brian Billick will install more of his offense and defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis will refine his coverage schemes for the secondary. "It's still very much a teaching time. We want to absorb a little more of the offense," Billick said. "We'll install a couple of new things they haven't seen and we'll start to form some of the things they already know. We'll start to push them a little bit." WRs Pat Johnson (a bad case of the drops), Floyd Turner (out of shape) and James Roe (hamstring) must be on the spot to improve. The Ravens are looking to carry only 5 WRs and with Jermaine Lewis, Qadry Ismail, Johnson and rookie Brandon Stokely looking good Turner and Roe could be fighting for a roster spot. Street Free Agent WR Kendrick Nord has been looking impressive. "Nord is the wild card. He could come along and give us something on special teams that James and Floyd can't even think about doing," Billick said. "If [Nord] can run down the field and hit people [on special teams] like [receiver] Jake Reed did for us for his first two years in Minnesota, then there's our fifth guy."
