Fri, 11 May 2012 22:14:39 -0700 Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura indicated Friday, May 11, that RPs Addison Reed, Hector Santiago and Matt Thornton might be used in a three-way closer situation. The situation will likely dictate who Ventura turns to. "Addison's done well, so you probably look for him if they have a bunch of righties coming up," Ventura said. "You probably look for Matty if they have a bunch of lefties coming up. If it's a mix, we'll probably have Hector."
Sat, 05 May 2012 09:03:28 -0700 Chicago White Sox RP Matt Thornton allowed two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning against the Detroit Tigers Friday, May 4, to suffer his first blown save of the season.
Sun, 29 Apr 2012 23:43:56 -0700 Chicago White Sox RP Matt Thornton got the chance for the save Sunday, April 29, against the Boston Red Sox, and he retired them in order for his first save. However, manager Robin Ventura said that it doesn't necessarily mean RP Hector Santiago is out of the closer's role. "It is nothing against Hector, he still will be there in the ninth, but you're looking at (a) guy with a body of work against (2B Dustin Pedroia, 1B Adrian Gonzalez and DH David Ortiz)," Ventura said. "I felt confident leaving Matt in there."
Wed, 25 Apr 2012 20:20:51 -0700 Chicago White Sox RP Matt Thornton struck out the side in the eighth inning Wednesday, April 25, against the Oakland Athletics, lowering his ERA to 0.93 on the season.
Fri, 13 Apr 2012 13:36:54 -0700 Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said RPs Matt Thornton and Jesse Crain are critical to the team's bullpen, but the team likes them better filling the seventh and eighth innings. The initial decision on closer came down to RPs Hector Santiago and Addison Reed. "We all know in a game that (the) ninth inning doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have the toughest hitters up," Williams said. "The situation to win the game might be in the seventh or the eighth inning, so to have those guys available and interchangeable for that kind of fit everything together."
Sun, 08 Apr 2012 11:04:53 -0700 Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said RP Hector Santiago was named the closer because of his effectiveness against both left-handed and right-handed batters, as well as the fact that the team wanted to keep RPs Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton in the setup roles that have made them so successful. "We got toward the end (of spring training), and you start looking at what he has and what he brings," Ventura said. "Instead of making him be the long guy, we started looking at him more at the end of the game. You don't have to move anybody around and still keep Jesse and Matt in the seventh and eighth, which are very important innings."
Sat, 07 Apr 2012 22:38:37 -0700 Chicago White Sox RP Hector Santiago worked a perfect 11-pitch ninth inning for the save Saturday, April 7, against the Texas Rangers. RP Matt Thornton came on in the eighth inning and worked a scoreless inning to earn the relief win. "It was kind of hinted (on Friday)," Santiago said.
Fri, 06 Apr 2012 19:03:08 -0700 Chicago White Sox RPs Addison Reed and Matt Thornton warmed up and eventually entered the regular season opener Friday, April 6, against the Texas Rangers. "Well, I don't know if it has eliminated two guys," Thornton said. "But it's clear at least two are out of the running." Reed threw a scoreless seventh inning, and Thornton tossed a scoreless eighth. RPs Jesse Crain and Hector Santiago were not used, although Santiago received the call to start loosening in case the White Sox rallied to take the lead. However, manager Robin Ventura would not say if Santiago would be the team's closer, and he even mentioned RPs Nathan Jones or Will Ohman could have gotten the call, too.
Thu, 05 Apr 2012 17:03:53 -0700 Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura has yet to name a closer before the team's opening day game Friday, April 6, but he said the pitchers will know before the game begins against the Texas Rangers. "It could be any of the seven guys we have in the bullpen," pitching Don Cooper said. RPs Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain, Addison Reed and Hector Santiago are all in consideration. There will be no closer-by-committee scenario.
Mon, 02 Apr 2012 13:46:23 -0700 Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura has yet to name a closer with opening day quickly approaching. "Hopefully, when we're winning in the ninth in the first game," Ventura said in response to a question about when he will reveal his closer. "I will know, and (the team) will know, but I just don't feel the need to tell everybody and make a statement about it." Ventura added RP Hector Santiago to the discussion, along with RPs Addison Reed, Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton.
