Jayson Stark, of ESPN.com, reports former MLB 3B Mike Schmidt said he would endorse New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez for the Hall of Fame. "Would I welcome him? Yeah, I will -- if he got elected to the Hall of Fame," Schmidt said.

Phillies | Rollins likely on WBC team

David Murphy, of The Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins is likely going to be on the 2009 World Baseball Classic roster for the USA. Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, who will coach third base for the American team, has said that Rollins was on the squad, although Rollins indicated his inclusion was not yet definite.

The Associated Press' Fred Goodall reports New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez hit his 30th homer of the year Tuesday night, Sept. 2, to give him 11 straight seasons with 30 or more. The blast also moved him into a tie with Hall of Famer 3B Mike Schmidt for 12th on the all-time list with 548 career homers.

Philadelphia Phillies OF Pat Burrell hit his 20th home run of the season Tuesday night, July 1, reports The Associated Press' Charles Odum. The blast made him the only Phillies player besides Mike Schmidt to hit at least 20 homers in eight consecutive seasons. The team also has three players with at least 20 homers before the All-Star break for the first time in team history, with those players being Burrell, 2B Chase Utley (23 homers) and 1B Ryan Howard (20 homers).

Yankees | Rodriguez ties Schmidt as fastest players to reach 12 homers

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez hit two home runs, Friday, April 20, against the Boston Red Sox, according to the Associated Press. He joined Mike Schmidt, of the 1976 Philadelphia Phillies, as the fastest players to hit 12 home runs in a season; both players reached this mark in only 15 games. Rodriguez, who has homered in four consecutive games, has also hit safely in every game this year, and leads the major leagues with 30 runs batted in and 65 total bases.

The Dayton Daily News' Hal McCoy reports former Philadelphia Phillies 3B Mike Schmidt, in the area for a breakfast speaking engagement, criticized some of today's young hitters for their approach to striking out at the plate. "I look at Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell and I go, 'My God, if these guys cut their strikeouts down to 75 or 80, they put the ball in play 85 or 90 more times a year. That's at least 15 more home runs a year and at least 35 more RBIs a year'," Schmidt said.

The Associated Press reports Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard hit a three-run shot to center field in the sixth inning off Washington Nationals RP Kevin Gryboski on Aug. 29, equaling the club mark set by Mike Schmidt in 1980. Howard finished 2-for-3 with two walks. His three RBI gave him a major league-best 125 for the year.

The Associated Press reports Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard hit his 39th homer to surpass 100 RBI, sparking Philadelphia past the Atlanta Braves 9-6 on Aug. 7. Howard tied Greg Luzinski at No. 10 on the team list for homers in a season with a two-run shot in the fourth inning. He's got 51 games to catch single-season leader Mike Schmidt, who had 48 in 1980.
