The New York Daily News' Bill Madden reports Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is strongly considering reinstating all-time hits leader OF Pete Rose, in part, due to some lobbying from prominent Hall of Famers. Hall of Fame OF Hank Aaron, who is one of Selig's best friends, said publicly he would like to see Rose get in to the Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame 2B Joe Morgan and OF Frank Robinson also said they'd like to see Rose reinstated.

"That's the integrity of the game. And when you can change records when you do something illegal, it's just not right. Baseball records are sacred. If you do something illegal to surpass those records, it's just not good."

Malia Rulon, of the Gannett News Service, reports that an Ohio congressman and an attorney for former MLB IF/OF Pete Rose had worked for several weeks on a bill which would have allowed Congress to call on Major League Baseball to reinstate him. Neil Volz, chief of staff to former Rep. Bob Ney, said the idea to lobby for his reinstatement came after Rose was named to the All-Century Team in 1999. However, the proposed bill was never introduced because of Rose's reluctance to lobby Congress for the legislation, and it had never been reported until now. "We had it all ready to go, and (Rose) pulled the plug," Volz said. "We were willing to say it was all our idea, which it was, but he didn't want it to appear as if he was going over and asking for this."

He was followed by OF Jim Rice (307), CL Rich Gossage (285) and OF Andre Dawson (270). OF Willie McGee, also on the ballot for the first time, received 26 votes, exactly at the 5 percent cutoff to avoid being dropped in future years. OF Darryl Strawberry, another first-time eligible, got six votes and OF Pete Rose, ineligible for the ballot because of his lifetime ban from baseball, received nine write-in votes, six fewer than last year and his lowest total. Rose, who admitted last year that he bet on the Cincinnati Reds while managing them in the late 1980s, has been written in on 239 of 6,687 ballots (3.6 percent) over 14 years.
