Tampa Bay Rays OF Johnny Damon homered and drove in three runs in a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, June 28. Damon, with 2,653 hits, is one away from tying Ted Williams for 71st place on the career list.

Marlins | Cabrera joins exclusive company

The Miami Herald's Clark Spencer reports Florida Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs Sunday, Sept. 3, to become only the third player to drive in 100 runs or more in each of three consecutive seasons. Mel Ott and Ted Williams were the other two players.

Red Sox | Ortiz Sets Road Homer Record

The Associated Press' Fred Goodall reports Boston Red Sox 1B/DH David Ortiz, on the strength of a two-homer game Tuesday night, Sept. 20, set a team record with his 27th road home run. Hall of Famer Ted Williams had owned the record with 26 road home runs in 1957.

Reds | Griffey Hits Historic Homer

The Associated Press' Joe Kay reports Cincinnati Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. hit the 521st homer of his career Sunday, July 17, putting him in a tie with Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 14th on the career list. It was his 20th blast of the season and third in a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Great American Ball Park.

ESPN.com reports New York Mets C Mike Piazza's efforts to put Ted Williams to rest in a dignified manner came to a quick halt Friday, May 14, when Piazza's agent got a call from Williams' lawyer. Dan Lozano, representing Piazza, was advised by Peter Sutton of Boston, representing the Thumper's estate, that Piazza and his father, Vince, ought to back off, according to The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. Piazza, who had a personal relationship with Williams, had contacted Williams' daughter Bobby-Jo Ferrell and offered to assist in her effort to have the Hall of Famer's body removed from a deep freeze and cremated instead, then have his ashes spread over the deep waters off the Florida Keys. "Personally, my feelings haven't changed, but the last thing I want to do is interfere in a family matter," Mike Piazza said. "I just feel strongly that he [Williams] should be memorialized properly in some way."

Updating previous items, Mike Schneider, of the Associated Press, reports New York Mets C Mike Piazza supports the release of Hall of Famer Ted Williams' body from the Alcor Life Extension deep freeze facility. "The hope is that Ted Williams can one day be laid to rest in a dignified and respectful manner befitting a true American hero," Piazza told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. in editions of the paper running Thursday, May 13. "Right now I'm just a quiet supporter." Mark Farrell, husband of Williams' daughter Bobby Jo Ferrell, also said the two had spoken with Piazza recently and that the catcher had promised to help them gain the release of Ted Williams' body from Alcor.

The AP reports Houston Astros OF Craig Biggio tied Hall of Famer Ted Williams for 30th on the career doubles list following a double in a game Saturday night, Apr. 17. Biggio now has hit 525 doubles and trails Dave Parker by just one.
