Chicago Cubs vice president of baseball operations Theo Epstein is considering releasing RP Kevin Gregg following his postgame comments Friday, Sept. 20. "I expected to be treated better than this," Gregg said, showing his frustration with the team planning to give RP Pedro Strop a few save opportunities as the season draws to a close. Shortly after making the comments, Gregg was called into a meeting with Epstein and manager Dale Sveum. "I told him how disappointed I was with him given the way we treated him this year - bringing him back after the first stint didn't go well," Epstein said. "He ran to the media. That was his decision. I told him, as a man, I didn't respect that ... after a couple minutes he understood that he was wrong and apologized profusely."

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop will be used as the team's closer for the rest of the season as they look forward to next year. Strop is 0-for-3 in save situations this year but has 15 holds. RP Kevin Gregg was 32-for-37 in save situations this year, but he'll be a free agent in the offseason and Strop will be entering his first arbitration year.
Fantasy Tip: Run to your league's waiver wire and grab Strop immediately if you're in title contention and are lacking in saves. This could put you over the top in the final week of the season.

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly not interested in trading for Chicago Cubs CL Kevin Gregg.

The Chicago Cubs may consider using RP Pedro Strop as their closer next season. Entering play Sunday, Aug. 11, he had not been scored upon in 17 of his 18 appearances since joining the team. "He seems to be able to handle the eighth inning just fine," manager Dale Sveum said. "You just never know. That's a long way away. Hopefully, you have seven closers out there." Strop is currently serving as the set-up man and is unlikely to see any save opportunities during the rest of this season unless CL Kevin Gregg is unavailable.

The Chicago Cubs might not be done making trades before the deadline Wednesday, July 31. RP Kevin Gregg is the most likely to be traded, along with OF Nate Schierholtz. RP James Russell and SP Jeff Samardzija are extremely unlikely to be traded.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said over the weekend that RP Pedro Strop could be thrust into the closer role if and when RP Kevin Gregg is traded this month. "He's obviously one of the higher candidates just because he's pitched in high-profile games already in the big leagues," said Sveum of Strop, who pitched well in two playoff games for the Baltimore Orioles last fall. Strop hasn't allowed a run in eight outings with the Cubs since being traded July 2.
Fantasy Tip: If you're in search of saves, it would be wise to pick up Strop or Blake Parker now. Strop will be the next in line if Gregg is traded, which is expected. But don't count out Parker making his way to the ninth inning if Strop struggles.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said RPs Matt Guerrier and Pedro Strop won't be handed the eighth-inning setup role in front of RP Kevin Gregg. "I think (Blake) Parker pretty much put himself in that role right now," Sveum said. "It's pretty much going to be Parker and Gregg in those last two innings."
Fantasy Tip: Blake Parker is the main handcuff to Kevin Gregg in case the incumbent closer is traded at this month's deadline. If that happened, Guerrier or Strop would likely move into a setup role. Own Parker in deep mixed leagues if you're searching for saves. Guerrier and Strop can be ignored, for now.

The Chicago Cubs are receiving interest from other teams in RP Kevin Gregg.
Fantasy Tip: Gregg has pitched surprisingly well this year after assuming the closer role from Carlos Marmol. With Marmol now out of the picture in Chicago, the Cubbies don't have many stable closing options outside of Gregg. If Gregg were dealt, James Russell is the most obvious choice to be thrust into ninth-inning work.
