Padres | Melvin Upton to continue rehab

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 12:20:24 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) will continue his rehab from a foot injury in Arizona Friday, April 10, and he plans to resume running next week and then add baseball activities.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is not available at FantasyScore, because he's expected to miss at least the first month of the season. His trade to the Padres will likely hurt his fantasy value, unless the Friars elect to move Wil Myers to first base and give Upton the starting center field job. The likely scenario will be that Upton becomes the team's fourth outfielder when healthy.

Padres | Wil Myers to stay in center

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 04:35:08 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Wil Myers will be the team's center fielder despite the trade for OF Melvin Upton Jr., according to general manager A.J. Preller.

Fantasy Tip: Myers ($4,000, 8% of cap) slumped from .293 to .222 last season, but this trade gave him a change of scenery. Upton was only a .208 hitter himself, so Myers and his owners should have nothing to fear for now.

Braves | ATL acquires Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 15:34:34 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Carlos Quentin and OF Cameron Maybin were traded to the Atlanta Braves in a deal that includes SP Matt Wisler. The Padres received OF Melvin Upton Jr. and RP Craig Kimbrel back in return.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel, the top closer in baseball, didn't figure into the Braves' plans so he is headed to San Diego, where he will immediately fit into the roster and greatly improve the Padres bullpen. Quentin ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) and Maybin ($2,000, 4% of cap) will soak up some at-bats in Atlanta, but that's about it. Jonny Gomes is in left and Eric Young Jr. is in center for the time being, so Quentin and Maybin may see some time in the mix.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton acquired by SD

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 15:21:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel was traded to the San Diego Padres in a deal that also included OF Melvin Upton Jr. The Padres sent OF Carlos Quentin, OF Cameron Maybin, SP Matt Wisler and the 41st draft pick overall to the Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel, one of the top fantasy closers regardless of uniform, should receive more save chances as he joins what should be a more competitive club than Atlanta. Upton (foot) is currently out and won't rejoin the FantasyScore pool for at least a month.

Braves | Melvin Upton hopes to have boot removed

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 14:00:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is expected to remove the protective walking boot from his left foot Friday, April 3. He's missed most of spring training after being diagnosed with sesamoiditis, and he's unlikely to be ready to return before May. OF Eric Young Jr. has had a strong spring and is expected to start the season as the team's everyday center fielder. Upton has been able to hit in the cages with his boot.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has essentially become an afterthought in most standard 12-team mixed leagues because of his injury and his last two poor seasons in Atlanta. Young Jr. is a popular sleeper option in the later rounds for his stolen base prowess, and he could continue to see consistent playing time in the team's outfield when Upton eventually returns. Young ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) should be a cheap option for stolen bases at FantasyScore, too.

Braves | Melvin Upton progressing

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 16:04:42 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) remains in a walking boot, but he's hopeful of being cleared to increase his activities Thursday, March 19. There remains no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is expected to miss at least the first month of the season due to his injury. That leaves the door wide open for Eric Young Jr. to take over the starting field job to start the season. Young has been playing well in camp, and he's the clear front-runner for the job. Young becomes an attractive deep sleeper for stolen bases in deep mixed leagues. Upton, on the other hand, loses what already was lukewarm fantasy interest. He's still worth stashing at the tail end of mixed league drafts, though.

Braves | Melvin Upton could be out until May

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 15:20:08 -0800

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is expected to be sidelined until at least May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Upton was little more than a late-round flier in large mixed leagues prior to this prognosis due to consecutive poor seasons. Now, he can be bypassed entirely in standard league drafts. His injury will provide NL-only gamers a discount for his power and speed combo, but his batting average projects to be a drag in the low-.200s. Those in really deep mixed leagues might want to also draft and stash him in a DL spot.

Braves | Melvin Upton likely to miss spring training

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 12:56:57 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is expected to miss spring training, as he will be in a cast for two weeks and then a walking boot for another four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been arguably the worst everyday player in baseball the past two seasons, so this is another hit to his underwhelming fantasy stock. He has power-speed upside, but he has hit just .198 through 910 at-bats over the past two seasons. He is not worth drafting in the majority of mixed leagues.

Braves | Melvin Upton has toe injury

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 10:08:29 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (toe) is dealing with an injury to his toe, and he's heading for X-rays.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is a deep sleeper in mixed league drafts, mainly for his stolen base contributions. You know he'll be a thorn in your side in the batting average department, as he's posted BAs of just .208 and .184 in the last two years. Monitor his toe injury.

Braves | B.J. Upton changes name

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 13:39:11 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF B.J. Upton is now going by Melvin Upton Jr., which is his given name.

Fantasy Tip: Like Mike Stanton changing his name to Giancarlo, Upton obviously hopes a change of name jump-starts his bat. B.J. stood for Bossman Jr., so maybe Upton feels it's time to do something about that .198 average and 324 strikeouts in two seasons. He's still a player with little fantasy value.
