The Tampa Bay Rays avoided arbitration with SP David Price and OF B.J. Upton Tuesday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to one-year deals with both. Price will receive $4.35 million while Upton will make $7 million. RP Burke Badenhop also avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.075 million deal. The team appears headed to arbitration with SP Jeff Niemann.

The Washington Nationals' trade talks with the Tampa Bay Rays involving OF B.J. Upton have gone nowhere and at this point a trade is highly unlikely. "There's not a whole lot of motivation at this point to try to move him," one person familiar with the Rays said. "They proved that they could win this year when nobody thought they could. Why not try it again?" Upton was tendered a contract Monday, Dec. 12, and he could make roughly $7.5 million next year.

Tampa Bay Rays RPs J.P. Howell and Andy Sonnanstine are likely to be non-tendered by the deadline Monday, Dec. 12. SP Jeff Niemann, RP Joel Peralta, SP David Price and OF B.J. Upton are obvious candidates that will be tendered contracts.

Trade interest for Tampa Bay Rays OF B.J. Upton has been mild so far, as many teams do not have a need for a center fielder, or have willingness to spend for one.

The Washington Nationals aren't getting anywhere in trade talks for Minnesota Twins OFs Denard Span and Ben Revere or Tampa Bay Rays OF B.J. Upton, so they have turned their attention to Cuban OF Yoenis Cespedes.

The New York Mets are interested in bringing in a new center fielder next season. Free-agent OFs Grady Sizemore (Indians) and Coco Crisp (Athletics) are options. Tampa Bay Rays OF B.J. Upton could come into play if the Rays choose to non tender him. Crisp's agent said he wants to remain on the West coast, though.
