Padres | Melvin Upton out of lineup again

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 13:30:19 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. is not in the starting lineup Monday, July 25. OF Alex Dickerson is starting in left field and is hitting fifth against Toronto Blue Jays SP Aaron Sanchez. Also, 1B Brett Wallace is serving as the designated hitter and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: That's two straight days out for Upton, so check back to see if he's 100% physically. Dickerson and Wallace both have some pop in their lumber but are far too inconsistent to be anything more than low-end deep sleeper picks for daily owners.

Orioles | Baltimore targeting Melvin Upton?

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 22:04:10 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. is a name that the Baltimore Orioles have expressed an interest in potentially trading for. Sources indicate Upton is available to be acquired in the right deal.

Fantasy Tip: Upton, who was acquired in what was essentially a salary dump in 2015 when the Pads dealt for his brother, is in the midst of his best season since he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. He's one of just three players with 20 or more steals and double-digit homers, and that's despite playing in a notorious pitcher's park. If he were to join the O's his value would receive an uptick, and he'd become a hot property in AL-only leagues.

Padres | Melvin Upton, Ryan Schimpf setting table

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 13:38:47 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. is leading off against Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark Friday, July 22, with 2B Ryan Schimpf hitting second in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Upton's combination of speed (20 stolen bases) and power (16 home runs) plays in all fantasy formats. His resurgent season has made him a fine value play in daily leagues, too, including tonight in his return to the leadoff role. Schimpf is likely hitting second with Wil Myers out this evening, but it's notable. The second baseman has shown impressive pop with seven long balls in just 78 at-bats and shouldn't be ignored as a low-price DFS play tonight.

Padres | Melvin Upton, Ryan Schimpf sitting

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 15:21:00 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. and 2B Ryan Schimpf are not in the starting lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, July 20. OF Alex Dickerson is starting in left field and batting sixth, while INF Adam Rosales is at the keystone and is hitting seventh against Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia.

Fantasy Tip: Dickerson has some moderate pop but doesn't play enough to be anything more than a bench piece in NL-only leagues. He's a bad play against the southpaw in DFS, too. Rosales is even less attractive with his .197/.282/.409 slash line on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Upton produces numbers both worthy of a middle-lineup hitter and a leadoff guy. He has a .262-16-44 line heading into this game, along with 20 stolen bases. Whether he's leadoff or in the middle, Upton gets the job done and should be in your daily or overall lineup in all leagues.

He's had a resurgence in SD this year with a .262/.311/.454 slash line, 16 home runs, 45 runs, 44 RBI and 20 steals. Any 20-30 candidate is a must-own and must-start in all leagues.

Padres | Melvin Upton back from bereavement list

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 12:39:14 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. was reinstated from the bereavement list Monday, July 18. In a corresponding move, 3B Brett Wallace was placed on the paternity list.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is having an excellent season and is tipping the scales across the counting stats with 45 runs, 16 home runs, 44 RBI and 20 stolen bases. His .262/.311/.454 slash line isn't an anchor, either. He should be universally owned and started. Wallace hasn't received a start in July, so he's not worth rostering in any fantasy format at this stage.
