Pittsburgh Pirates OF Matt Diaz said he made a couple mechanical tweaks to his swing, like starting a bit earlier, which helped him break his slump against left-handed pitching. He was 1-for-18 against lefties this season before going 3-for-5 against lefties over the weekend.

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates OF Matt Diaz was used in the cleanup spot Thursday, April 14, for just the 12th time in his big league career, reports Jenifer Langosch, of MLB.com. He was hitless in four at-bats with a pair of strikeouts against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle tweaked his lineup Thursday, April 14, after the team has lost its last three games, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Colin Dunlap. 3B Pedro Alvarez is taking the day off and has just three hits in his last 19 at-bats without a home run. OF Steve Pearce is starting at third base and hitting fifth. 1B Lyle Overbay has been moved from the fourth spot to six in the lineup and OF Matt Diaz is hitting cleanup. C Chris Snyder will make his first start of the year and will hit seventh.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle indicated that either OF Matt Diaz or OF/1B Steve Pearce would serve as the team's emergency third catcher, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. There are no plans for 2B Neil Walker to ever play behind the plate again, even though he played the position for several years in the minor leagues.
