I hope it doesn't come back to haunt us. Whoever made that decision, I'm pretty sure they're hoping the same thing," Owens said. He and Vanderjagt hit it off in their brief time as teammates. Owens said he has spoken with Vanderjagt since he's been cut from Dallas. Owens added, "Going into the Colts game, the guy was 12-of-15. That's still a high kicking percentage. He didn't lose any games for us. If I had to put myself in the mix, I feel like I lost some games and I'm still here, so it's just unfortunate."

Manning responded to Vanderjagt's comments and referred to him as the idiot kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth. "I said something I shouldn't have said, it bothered him and that's what he came back with. That doesn't make it the truth. It's absolutely false. There is nothing in my past that would indicate to him that he should say something like that. That could be gamble if it's PK Mike Vanderjagt, who performed poorly in training camp and the preseason, but Parcells would rather not ask PK Shaun Suisham to kick field goals because he has played in only three NFL games and has four career attempts, with three coming from 20-29 yards. Parcells could suit up Vanderjagt and Suisham, but that would create a depth problem elsewhere.

Tom Orsborn, of the Express-News, reports Dallas Cowboys PK Mike Vanderjagt (groin) would not blame his groin injury for his poor performance Thursday, Aug. 31. Asked if the sore groin that forced him to miss two of the Cowboys' four exhibition games had anything to do with the misses, Vanderjagt said, "I'm not going to put it on that. I'm certainly not 100 percent, but you should make a 32-yard field goal in your sleep. Write what you want. It was sorry kicking." The fans who stayed for the extra session certainly agreed. They showered Vanderjagt with boos after both misses and did the same when he jogged onto the field for the final attempt with 11 seconds left. "I don't make excuses for two (easy) field goals from the middle of the field," Vanderjagt said. Asked if Vanderjagt's injury was still an issue, head coach Bill Parcells said, "I don't think so. He kicked all week and he looked fine to me in warmups."

Vanderjagt kicked in practice for the second consecutive day, Tuesday, Aug. 29, and Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells is hopeful Vanderjagt can play in Thursday's preseason finale against Minnesota, Aug. 31. "I'm hoping he could do field goals for sure, maybe not all of them," Parcells said of Vanderjagt, who sat out the last two games as a precaution. "And I would really like for him to see if he could kick off, maybe at least once. But I don't want to do that at the risk of kind of putting him back where he was. That's going to be his call." The head coach said Vanderjagt kicked off 10-15 times at "80-85 percent" in practice.
