The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Cincinnati Reds general manager Dan O'Brien believes firing MAN Dave Miley was the right decision and that the team can still salvage the 2005 season. "It was a very emotional decision for that very reason," O'Brien said. "But given the way the major league team has performed to date, we felt that new leadership was needed in the dugout. This isn't a decision to be taken lightly. However, we felt that a change in direction was needed. We still have expectations for the 2005 season. We felt a change needed to made for that reason."

The Associated Press is reporting Cincinnati Reds chief operating officer John Allen flew to Denver and met with MAN Dave Miley June 5 to discuss the direction of the franchise. Calling the team's performance this season "unacceptable," Allen said he didn't speak directly to the players, but acknowledged changes could be on the way if things don't turn around soon. "Certainly the status-quo end result is unacceptable," Allen said.

Updating a previous item, The Dayton Daily News' Hal McCoy reports Cincinnati Reds OF Wily Mo Pena (quadriceps) struck out in his first four official at-bats, but is 6-for-13 since then with a homer, four RBIs, a walk and three strikeouts on his rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville. "Don't know," Cincinnati Reds MAN Dave Miley said when asked about Pena's return date. "He needs at-bats. He missed nearly a month."

"On how we can get back to the basics. Nothing major. We called in Joe Randa and Sean Casey, our cornermen in the infield, and talked about the basics, about taking a step back and starting over. That's about it," Miley said.

Randa entered Monday, April 25 with one hit in his last 22 at-bats and three in his last 34 before going 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI double that night. "He'll be fine," said Miley. "Hitters are going to go through some slumps; he brings a lot to the table in other ways."
