Associated Press reports the NFL has lifted their suspension on DT Darrell Russell, who is now free to sign with any NFL team he desires. The league suspended him indefinitely in July 2004 for testing positive for drugs. He has previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders.

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports the NFL has suspended DT Darrell Russell indefinitely for being a repeat violator of the NFL's substance abuse policy. To date, he's had seven infractions of the league's policy since being drafted in 1997; and he's missed 1 1/2 years while serving two league suspensions. Russell can apply for reinstatement at midseason.

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to release veteran DT Darrell Russell after he violated his treatment program by testing positive for alcohol last month. Russell faces another indefinite suspension by the league as this is his seventh infracation of the NFL's substance abuse policy since entering the NFL in 1997. Russell could seek reinstatement following the eighth week of the upcoming season, but the league is determining a new course of treatment for the former first-round pick.

Updating a previous report, Jim Flynn of PewterReport.com, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers recent release of DL Darrell Russell may have been tied to his reporting to minincamps nearly 20 pounds overweight, although Buccaneers' general manager Bruce Allen would not confirm that was the sole cause. "We gave him the opportunity to succeed here and it just didn't work out for him," said Allen. "I'm not going to get into specifics, but there were certain things we wanted him to adhere to and he didn't do that."

"We had eight weeks to evaluate him. We were looking for a guy who loved to play and loved to practice, who had a passion and a love for the game. Russell forced a fumble towards the end of the first half that stopped a potential Cowboys' scoring drive. "I didn't think I would be where I'm at, but it comes down to the same old football," Russell said. "My wind is good. I just have to get back in football shape. That will just come with time and practice. It will take maybe another week, week and a half."
