Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine indicated 1B Adrian Gonzalez likely will not be used in the outfield when the team plays at Fenway Park. Gonzalez would have to cover more ground if he played right field at home and is not used to playing left field.

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine and general manager Ben Cherington agree that they want to limit OF Adrian Gonzalez's exposure to the outfield despite the fact that he played some outfield during winter ball and made some good catches out there in interleague play last weekend. "Even in a small outfield, we'll have to appraise the situation a little more as we see it," Valentine said. "I would say that probably less is better than more." 3B Will Middlebrooks won't be asked to move to the outfield.

The Boston Red Sox activated 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 22, and he's in the starting lineup. Youkilis is batting fifth and starting at first base, with 3B Will Middlebrooks starting at third and 1B Adrian Gonzalez in right field.

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and manager Bobby Valentine are looking for ways to allow 3B Will Middlebrooks to stay in the lineup when 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) returns from the disabled list. The team may stick 1B Adrian Gonzalez in right field to allow Middlebrooks to play first base with Youkilis at third.

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz played in back-to-back games at first base against the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend. He was called upon again Sunday, May 20, due to the team being shorthanded in the outfield. 1B Adrian Gonzalez started in right field.
