Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez (neck) told manager Don Mattingly Friday, May 3, that his neck injury occurred in a game against the Colorado Rockies Wednesday, May 1, when he collided with first-base umpire Tony Randazzo while attempting to chase a double by Carlos Gonzalez down the right-field line in the eighth inning. He remained in the game but didn't inform Mattingly until Friday, when he had difficulty hitting in the indoor batting cage. "I can't turn my neck to face the pitcher," he said. "If I can't see the pitcher, I can't hit. They told me it's kind of like a car crash. I get a shooting pain every time I turn my neck. I couldn't sleep (Thursday) night. I tried everything I could (Friday) to play."

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez has been training with former boxing heavyweight Chris Byrd in the offseason, and Byrd said the 230-pound Gonzalez is a world-class athlete. "I've been at the highest level at amateur and pro," says Byrd, a silver medalist at the 1992 Olympics. "I know how hard guys work. He's a monster." Boxing drills have become a big part of Gonzalez's core-strengthening work. "Everything is an explosive movement," Gonzalez says. "Nothing's stationary." He's also taking part in a body-alignment program similar to yoga. 3B Luis Cruz has also been involved in some of Gonzalez's workouts, and the two have formed a close bond.
