Former New York Mets OF Darryl Strawberry believes the offseason could have gone a little better for his old team, reports The New York Daily News. Strawberry thinks the signing of OF Jason Bay was a good one but the injury situation for OF Carlos Beltran was bungled, and he also said the team needed more pitching depth.

New York Newsday's Jim Baumbach reports former New York Yankees OF Darryl Strawberry called Yankees executive Ray Negron and asked him to pass along some words to SP Joba Chamberlain, who was arrested for DUI earlier this week. "I told him I think the main thing for Joba right now is he needs to look at himself in the mirror and evaluate himself, more than anything," Strawberry said. "At that age, in the situation he's in with the Yankees, it's easy to think you can do whatever you want to do. But that's just the beginning."

The Associated Press reports the government has filed a lawsuit against former New York Mets OF Darryl Strawberry, seeking to collect nearly a half-million dollars in unpaid taxes. After all penalties and interest have been added up, Strawberry owes the government $481,656.86 as of May 31.

Giants | Police & courts: Brown fire being investigated as arson

Updating an earlier item, the Associated Press' Monica Rhor reports a mysterious fire that led to the death of former San Francisco Giants 3B Chris Brown is being investigated by local police as arson. Brown's two-story home in the Houston, Tx., suburb of Sugar Land caught fire around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 30. Four hours later a gravely injured Brown showed up at a nearby hospital, but police don't know how he got there or who may have set the fire. Brown died from his injuries Dec. 26. Police have not ruled out anyone, including Brown, as a suspect in the arson. However, former Crenshaw High School teammate and major league OF Darryl Strawberry said he was sure Brown wasn't the instigator. "Chris never harmed anyone in his life," said Strawberry. "He's not going to kill himself. He's not going to hurt anyone else. I know that for a fact. Something happened, and they need to find out what happened."

The Associated Press reports former New York Yankees OF Darryl Strawberry feels it is up to current Yankees SS Derek Jeter to embrace 3B Alex Rodriguez to get rid of any bad chemistry in the clubhouse. "They've got to come together," Strawberry said Tuesday, Dec. 19. "It's time for them to mend their relationship and get back to, like, OK, let's have some fun. We're here in New York together. We're on the greatest team that we possibly could play on. Let's try to win instead of going separate ways. Because I remember them when they were young and they went to dinner together and they did everything together."

The Bergen Record is reporting former New York Mets OF Darryl Strawberry is boycotting a reunion of the 1986 championship team scheduled for later this month, in a financial dispute. Strawberry was asking the Mets, as a favor, to pay in full the estimated $1.4 million he's owed for the next 10 years. The bulk of that money was to go to satisfying Strawberry's remaining debt to the IRS.

MLB | Strawberry Charged with Filing False Report

The Associated Press reports former MLB OF Darryl Strawberry has been charged with filing a false police report after investigators watching a gas station surveillance video saw him drive off in a different sport utility vehicle than the one he reported stolen. Strawberry told a detective Wednesday that he lied when he reported on Sept. 17 that his rental SUV, a silver Nissan Murano, was stolen from a Delray Beach gas station. But in a surveillance video of the gas station viewed by investigators, Strawberry appeared to be the passenger in a Land Rover driven by a woman, police said.
