During his press conference, Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said free agent WR Rashaun Woods (hamstring) failed his physical because of a hamstring pull and he was unable to practice at this time. Shanahan added, "Until a player is ready to practice full speed, they don't pass the physical. Right now we are not really sure on how long he is going to be out. He's got a bad hamstring pull, he doesn't feel comfortable with it and we had an MRI on it so the chances are, unless we lost somebody, that he will not come back."

The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers WR Rashaun Woods is still in danger of losing his roster spot because he has missed so much practice time with injuries. If he were to be waived, San Francisco would take a hefty salary-cap hit. Head coach Mike Nolan claims the 49ers wouldn't hesitate to cut anybody, regardless of their financial constraints. "Rashaun Woods needs to get on the field, which he's doing right now, and prove that he's worthy of one of those four or five spots," said Nolan, adding the club could even keep six receivers. "That's where his focus needs to be, not (thinking), 'I'm going to be here anyway.' That's not the case. Everybody has to earn their position. It's not that we're going to keep somebody because of the money."

Head coach Mike Nolan, who last week said the injury was a groin strain, amended the diagnosis, saying Woods has a pulled hamstring. Woods returned for the special teams practice Tuesday afternoon, August 9, and Nolan said he thinks he will practice again today.

When healthy, Woods was no better than fifth on the receiving depth chart. Quite possibly, he is lower than that, considering head coach Mike Nolan repeatedly says he thinks all his draft choices, including WRs Rasheed Marshall and Marcus Maxwell, will make the team. Nolan said Woods should work on "getting himself right," and he was not referring to the groin injury. Asked whether Woods' status as a recent first-round draft choice might help him stick with the team, Nolan said, "You're trying to make the best football team. You can't get into that stuff right there." Nolan is hopeful Woods can return to practice Saturday afternoon, August 6.
