Jesse Sanchez, of MLB.com, reports the Cincinnati Reds optioned 1B Yonder Alonso and P Bill Bray to Triple-A Louisville Thursday, March 18, and optioned P Jordan Smith and P Phil Valiquette to Double-A Carolina. The team also reassigned P Jon Adkins and OF Josh Anderson to the minors.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Cincinnati Reds optioned Ps Sam Lecure, Steven Avery and Matt Maloney to Triple-A Louisville Tuesday, March 17. IF Juan Francisco was optioned to Double-A Charlotte. P James Avery, 1B Wes Bankston, 1B Kevin Baker, IF Luis Bolivar, P Adam Pettyjohn, P Ben Jukich and P Jordan Smith were all reassigned to the minor leagues.

Washington Nationals P Dan Smith, pitching for Triple-A New Orleans, continues to have problems with his location, according to Bill Ladson of Nationals.MLB.com. For the season, Smith has given up 19 runs in 15 2/3 innings with Triple-A New Orleans, and opponents are batting .387 against him. In his most recent appearance Saturday, May 28, Smith pitched two innings, walking two batters and striking out one, while giving up one run and three hits against Triple-A Nashville.

Expos | Smith Likely to Return

Updating a previous item, Bill Ladson, of Montreal.Expos.MLB.com, reports P Dan Smith (arm, shoulder, back), who was released by the Montreal Expos Oct. 12 following a slate of injury problems, plans to sign a minor league deal with the Expos. "I have no thoughts or desires to pitch for another team," said Smith. "The Expos have been loyal to me during my injury." He also said he understood their reason for releasing him in the first place was "as protection just in case I'm not ready to pitch next year." The 29-year-old pitcher hasn't pitched in a game since June 2003 because of arm, shoulder and back problems.

Expos.MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports Montreal Expos P Dan Smith (shoulder) threw another bullpen session Monday, March 15, and threw 45 pitches without pain. Smith was pleased with his performance because he felt stronger after every pitch. "I think the strength is building," said Smith. "I see all these guys throwing and getting ready to break camp and I'm still focusing on building arm strength. It's going to be a challenge that I stay patient and stay focused on the long-term goal."
