Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Sunday, May 13, that RPs Ryan Cook and Grant Balfour will work in the seventh and eighth innings for now. Cook has not allowed a run in 16 2/3 innings this year.

Oakland Athletics RP Grant Balfour is upset about losing the closer's job, and he voiced his displeasure to manager Bob Melvin. "I told him I wasn't happy," Balfour said. "I was (ticked) off. That's fine. Whatever. I'll just go on the field and do what I gotta do."

Oakland Athletics RP Grant Balfour earned his seventh save of the year against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, May 5. He allowed one hit over one scoreless inning. Balfour has 17 career saves and is currently tied with Graeme Lloyd for most saves by an Australian-born pitcher.

Oakland Athletics RP Grant Balfour said he has been sick lately and he dealt with some minor back tightness in his outing Tuesday, May 1, but he isn't using that as an excuse for his poor recent performance, in which he's 0-1 with a save, two blown saves and a 23.14 ERA in his last four outings. Manager Bob Melvin has indicated that he isn't ready to make a switch.

Oakland Athletics RP Jordan Norberto earned his first major league save against the Boston Red Sox Tuesday, May 1, after cleaning up for RP Grant Balfour with two men on base in the ninth. RP Ryan Cook hasn't allowed a run in 10 outings this year, and he's given up just one hit. Balfour has blown his two saves in his last four appearances, and the emergence of Cook and Norberto will make it easier for the team to trade Balfour this summer. However, manager Bob Melvin said nothing has changed as far as roles in the bullpen after Balfour's letdown.
