Either Jacksonville Jaguars LB Tony Gilbert or LB Daryl Smith would start at middle linebacker Saturday, Jan. 7, if LB Mike Peterson (wrist) can't play in the game. If Smith is forced to start at middle linebacker, LB Greg Favors might get the start at outside linebacker.

The Tampa Tribune reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb (ribs) was working as a reporter for the NFL Network at Pro Bowl practices all week. He originally was supposed to play, but had to withdraw after tearing rib cartilage in the NFC Championship Game against the Carolina Panthers. McNabb was hurt when he was hit by Panthers LB Greg Favors. "It probably wasn't a dirty hit," McNabb said. "Maybe he didn't have to lean into me like that. But, as a player, you never know. It's nothing that I'm upset about."

The Charlotte Observer reports Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields (thumb) was hospitalized overnight in Charlotte on Wednesday, August 13 to facilitate getting antibiotics to his lanced thumb. Panthers head coach John Fox said Fields likely won't play the Friday, August 15 pre-season game against the New York Giants. Fox said he expected Panthers LB Greg Favors to start at strong-side linebacker in place of Fields.
