Matt Winkeljohn, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons LB Artie Ulmer was recently subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating BALCO, a company that prescribes nutritional supplements for elite athletes, and its founder Victor Conte. Conte, who served as Ulmer's nutritionist for several months, is being investigated for using an illegal, and until recently, an untraceable steroid in his supplements. Ulmer, despite a previous suspension for testing positive for steroids, does not plan to hire an attorney. "Nah, I've got nothing to hide," he said. "I'm nervous about going up there, but they just said, 'Tell the truth, and everything will be fine.' Man, all I can tell you is Victor never said anything about drugs or steroids to me."

Matt Winklejohn, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports there are no obvious signs that Atlanta Falcons team officials will make roster moves before the first round of mandatory cuts, but if they do, it wouldn't be a shock if they paid attention to the inside linebacker position. With Falcons LB Twan Russell (knee) having recurring left knee problems and the inexperience of rookie LB Recardo Wimbush and newcomer LB Tony Ortiz, Falcons head coach Dan Reeves acknowledged, "We're thin at the inside linebacker position." The other reserve there, playing behind starting LBs Keith Brooking and Chris Draft, is special-teams ace LB Artie Ulmer.

S Ronnie Bradford (knee), who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery a little over a week ago, also practiced and could be upgraded from doubtful if he continues to practice with no problems. It was originally thought that he could miss as much as 3 weeks of action. DT Shane Dronett (ankle) and G Bob Hallen (back) also practiced on Wednesday. T Michael Thompson (foot) injured his foot while on a treadmill over the weekend. He missed practice and is doubtful for this weekend's game.

LB Chris Draft did not participate in practice today due to his toe injury. Artie Ulmer has been taking his place at weakside linebacker. Backup CB Conrad Hamilton returned to practice for the first time since suffering a slight tear of his left hamstring in the first quarter of the Falcons season-opener. Coach Dan Reeves said it is unlikely he will play this week. CB Darrick Vaughn has been filling in for Hamilton in the nickel defense. Reeves also indicated if G Kynan Forney is ready to go, he will play. WR Tony Martin remains out with a broken clavicle in his right shoulder.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Atlanta Falcons had some good news on the injury front as they learned that LB Artie Ulmer did not break his right hand; he sprained it. LB Trey Merkens (left knee, right ankle) was injured during Friday's pre-season game and he is expected to undergo an MRI today. CBs Elijah Williams (hamstring) and Darrick Vaughn (jaw), T Ephraim Salaam (knee), C Todd McClure (back), and DE Chuck Wiley (hamstring) are all dinged up, but none of the injuries appear serious.

As a follow up to last night's report, the Contra Costa Times reports the tender offer from the San Francisco 49ers to QB Jeff Garcia was the minimum $389,000 tender. Garcia is expected to land a more lucrative deal later this year. Garcia earned close to $3 million last season, including nearly $2.5 million in incentives. "I suspect we'll begin serious discussions next month," said Garcia's agent, Steve Baker. The team didn't issue ofers to three unrestricted free agents: OG Phil Ostrowski, LB Artie Ulmer and DT Nate Hobgood-Chittick. OT Dan Dercher, an exclusive rights free agent, also wasn't tendered, making him an unrestricted free agent.
