St. Louis Cardinals RP David Aardsma, who is at Triple-A Memphis, may not get a chance to make the parent club if RP Jason Motte goes back to St. Louis. Aardsma has a May 15 opt-out date and can elect free agency.

Cleveland Indians RP David Aardsma is in camp as a non-roster player, and his speed is key to manager Terry Francona. "It's going to be interesting to see where his velocity sits," Francona said. "When I had him last time (in 2008 with the Boston Red Sox) he was 94 to 95 with a wipeout split. The split has good action in the bullpen, but we want to see where his velocity gets to. Last year, Aardsma's fastball averaged 91.2 mph, and he threw it 64 percent of the time along with a slider and the aforementioned splitter.

New York Mets RP LaTroy Hawkins (testicle) is expected to be available to pitch Friday, Aug. 16.
Fantasy Tip: Hawkins will need to be rested down the stretch, but he's the favorite for the majority of save chances if Bobby Parnell (neck) doesn't return again this year. Gonzalez Germen and David Aardsma might receive consideration, too. Germen closed out the game last night with Hawkins unavailable.

New York Mets RP LaTroy Hawkins is likely unavailable on Thursday, Aug. 15. Manager Terry Collins indicated that Gonzalez Germen or David Aardsma may close if the team encounters a save situation in the club's contest tonight.
Fantasy Tip: Hawkins blew a first save on Wednesday, his first since Bobby Parnell (neck) went on the DL, and his 40-year-old bones probably need a break. He still remains the favorite for saves for the Mets, although those mentioned may vulture opportunities a little more often than a regular closer would.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins expects to use RP LaTroy Hawkins to close for the second straight day if a situation arises Wednesday, Aug. 7. Hawkins picked up his first save of the year Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Fantasy Tip: It looks as though Hawkins will have the first crack at closing for the Mets in the absence of Bobby Parnell (neck), but Scott Rice could also be used in left-heavy situations. Don't rule out David Aardsma seeing a chance or two if Hawkins falters, too. For fantasy purposes, Hawkins should be your first target.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (neck) may need to undergo surgery if the epidural injection he received Monday, Aug. 5, does not work.
Fantasy Tip: Surgery would almost assuredly keep Parnell from returning again this year. That would make David Aardsma, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Rice or whoever else takes advantage of his absence more valuable in deeper leagues. This could be a very frustrating closer-by-committee situation for fantasy owners, though.
