Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler still the closer

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 16:17:10 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler remains the team's closer after Arizona signed RP Tyler Clippard, according to general manager Dave Stewart.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler earned the role of closer after shutting down 30 games in 2015. However, he doesn't have typical closer stuff (4.8 strikeouts per nine), and any early season falter could throw Clippard or Daniel Hudson into the job. Clippard is the better speculative pick in deep mixed or NL-only leagues, as he has 53 career saves himself.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler has option picked up

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 10:29:59 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler had his 2016 option exercised by the team Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler handled the majority of the Diamondbacks save chances in 2015 and was pretty successful, closing out 30 games with a 1.85 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. However, he struck out just 4.8 hitters per nine innings, so he's not your typical hard-throwing fireman. He'll likely enter the year as Arizona's ninth-inning guy again, but he probably won't have a long leash if he struggles, making him more of a low-end closer option.

Diamondbacks | ARI will pick up Brad Ziegler option

Sun, 11 Oct 2015 13:43:59 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler will have his $5.5 million option picked up for the 2016 season, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler will have fantasy value in most leagues as long as he remains closer. However, the Diamondbacks may be in play for a higher-tier closer like Aroldis Chapman, so you may want to pay attention to this situation.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler to return Friday

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 15:12:46 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler is expected to return to the team Friday, Oct. 2, after the birth of his daughter. He will be available for the series to close out the year against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Continue running Ziegler out there through the weekend. He's been very successful since taking over the role of Arizona's ninth-inning closer. Expect Daniel Hudson to pitch the ninth if a save situation arises Thursday night.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler away from team

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 15:40:11 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler is away from the team Tuesday, Sept. 29, following the birth of his baby daughter.

Fantasy Tip: With Ziegler away tonight, Daniel Hudson is the most likely candidate to step in in the ninth inning if a save situation arises for the D-backs.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler records five-out save

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 23:30:01 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler recorded a five-out save Monday, July 20.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler threw 40 pitches in the game, so it's highly unlikely he'll be able to throw Tuesday, and maybe Wednesday. Dan Hudson could figure into a save chance. If you're in daily waivers leagues and you're desperate, look for him. Ziegler has been amazing with a 1.08 ERA and 15 saves in 17 chances. He's a solid second reliever to own.

Diamondbacks | Addison Reed to see save chances?

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 11:37:51 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed has settled down since being demoted from the closer's role in mid-May, and he could start to see occasional save chances alongside RP Brad Ziegler, ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin speculates.

Fantasy Tip: You should speculate on Reed, too, if someone dumped him in your league and you're in need of saves. Ziegler has done a respectable job in the ninth but doesn't have the typical dominant stuff that a closer possesses. Handcuffing the two is the ideal situation to be in.

Diamondbacks | Addison Reed nearing closer gig

Sat, 30 May 2015 13:40:20 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed is moving closer to supplanting RP Brad Ziegler in the closer role. Manager Chip Hale said he would be looking closely at the matchups.

Fantasy Tip: Reed is still a volatile closing option, but he'll need to be owned universally where saves are a factor.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler hit hard

Fri, 29 May 2015 22:01:11 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler has allowed three hits, two earned runs and two walks in 1 2/3 innings over his last two appearances, converting one of his two save opportunities.

Fantasy Tip: The closer situation in Arizona is shaky, and Ziegler could lose chances to Addison or Enrique Burgos if he doesn't right the ship. Needless to say, you can't count on any of Arizona's relievers to provide you saves for the long haul.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler the main closer for now

Wed, 20 May 2015 10:41:40 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler is the team's main ninth-inning option with RP Addison Reed demoted from the closer's role, even though RP Enrique Burgos picked up the save Monday, May 18, according to manager Chip Hale. "I would say the number one guy right now for us to close a game is (Brad) Ziegler," Hale said. Ziegler has 33 career saves, while Burgos' first came Monday. However, Hale also made it sound as though Ziegler won't exclusively be pitching in the ninth. "In the long run, is Addison going to be our closer? Hopefully. Is Burgos going to be the closer? He has an opportunity to be with his stuff, but the experience is not there yet," Hale said.

Fantasy Tip: This situation is obviously fluid. If you're searching for saves, Ziegler should be your first choice, but Burgos deserves to be owned in NL-only and deep mixed leagues, at least. Purging Reed from your roster in shallow mixed leagues right now wouldn't be crazy. Know that the back end of Arizona's bullpen could be disappointing to count on for fantasy owners, though.
