Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports the Denver Broncos have offered a contract to re-sign free agent DT Ellis Johnson. However, it is unlikely he will be re-signed due to the other moves the team has made during the offseason to shore up the defensive line and because the team is tight against the salary cap.

The Denver Broncos are also a finalist to retain Johnson's services. Levine said it is his goal to wrap up the situation Friday, March 11.

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports the Denver Broncos do not possess a draft choice in the third, fourth and fifth rounds this year. They lost their third round pick because of salary cap violations in the 1990s. Their fourth round selection will likely be sent to the Cleveland Browns for DT Gerard Warren and their fifth round choice was traded to the Atlanta Falcons for DT Ellis Johnson last year.

DT Darius Holland, who has been de-activated on gameday six times this season, will also likely get some time as well.

The Denver Broncos have acquired DT Ellis Johnson in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons for a 2005 conditional draft pick. With Denver, Johnson will move to the exempt/commissioner permission list, where he can remain for up to two weeks. Johnson may be activated to the team's 53-man roster at any point within the two-week period.

Matt Winkeljohn, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons DT Ellis Johnson is demanding to be released from the team due to his contract situation. "I would really like to get released," Johnson said. "I'm playing pretty good. Not at a Pro Bowl level yet, but I'm playing pretty good. I think I'm worth more than $1.5 million. Obviously, the team and I don't see eye to eye on that, so why can't I get released?" If Johnson isn't released, he said he will wait until his contract expires and possibly join another team.

Matt Winkeljohn, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons DT Ellis Johnson, who is unhappy with his current contract, has hinted that he might have played his last down in the NFL. "I've made my mind up, and [the team] can't see it my way. I hope they're going to fill the roster spot with somebody else," Johnson said. "This will be the last time we talk about this. They've got some great players there, guys I enjoyed working with, and I don't want to be a distraction to that team." Johnson was scheduled to earn $1.5 million this year, but is seeking a pay raise after having a solid season in 2003.

After contemplating retirement, Johnson reported to the Greenville (S.C) camp before 44 other Falcons. "I'm here, and I'm going to play football for the Atlanta Falcons," he said. "That's basically the end of it. I'm happy to get back to playing nose guard and looking forward to a great season."

"We talked, and as far as I know he's still coming," Hill said. "It was a good conversation." Just 24 hours earlier, Johnson - without calling Falcons officials - phoned an Indianapolis Star columnist and said he was finished with the game. Johnson played for the Indianapolis Colts from 1995 to 2001.

"Most times coaches or owners make this decision for you. I sincerely believe I've still got it. But the truth of the matter is I'm not going back to Atlanta. I'm done. I don't want to leave my family again." Johnson was a first-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 1995.

''We're expecting him to be in camp on time," said Ray Anderson, the team's ' executive vice president and chief financial officer. ''We've been informed by the agent and Ellis that he will be there, and we're optimistic that Thursday night when everybody else reports he'll be there.''
