Updating a previous item, Stephen F. Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers SS Jermaine Phillips (arm) could be out for an extended period after suffering a possible broken arm injury in Week 8. "We're going to miss him," defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said. When pressed, Kiffin declined to be specific.

Adam Schefter, of NFL.com, reports Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis said during his press conference Tuesday, Sept. 30, that Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin wanted to leave the Buccaneers to join the Raiders.

Buccaneers | Piscitelli challenging for starting spot

Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers SS Sabby Piscitelli is challenging to be a starter on defense, according to defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Kiffin said Piscitelli, who missed all but three games last season with a foot injury, has really improved this offseason. Piscitelli could win a job as the team's third safety. He will compete with SS Tanard Jackson, SS Jermaine Phillips, FS Will Allen, SS Donte' Nicholson and FS Eugene Wilson for a safety spot on the depth chart.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said he is impressed with University of South Florida CB Mike Jenkins. "He can play man and he's got great man skills. We always talk about the Tampa 2. But like I said earlier, I can't teach speed. You can't teach a guy who runs a 4.8 (40-yard dash) to run a 4.3. You can work on skills, you can improve on catching the football. . . But the real good ones, they just have the hands," Kiffin said.

Buccaneers | Kiffin signs extension

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin signed a multi-year contract extension Friday, Jan. 18. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the contract is believed to be worth around $2 million per year. It was rumored that Kiffin was going to leave the Buccaneers to join head coach of the Oakland Raiders Lane Kiffin, who is his son.

Scott Reynolds, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said he would like to stay with the team after this season, and said he does not want to leave to coach for the Oakland Raiders and his son, Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin. "Whatever happened in Oakland has nothing to do with me just because of the [last name] Kiffin. Believe me. I am totally concentrating on the New York Giants. I love the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I love Tampa. I love my son, but that doesn't mean I don't like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Kiffin said. He is currently working without a contract for the Buccaneers.

Scott Reynolds, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin did not deny interest in the Nebraska head coaching vacancy when asked about the position following the team's Week 12 game. "Well, right now I haven't heard anything right now, so we'll just wait and see on that," said Kiffin, who was a Cornhuskers assistant coach from 1966-72 and the school's defensive coordinator from 1973-76. "You know, I spent a little time there, so we'll see."
