That means offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, special teams coordinator Danny Crossman and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham have retained their jobs.

Of the 296 offensive plays the Detroit Lions have run through four games, only five have been against man coverage, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Opponents want to attack the Lions offense by playing their safeties deep and play zone coverage in front of them. "We're going to have to have the ability to execute multiple-play, double-digit drives and score touchdowns," Linehan said. Through the first four games last season, the Lions had 21 plays of 20-plus yards and seven plays of 30 or more yards. Through the first four games this season they have 17 plays of 20-plus yards but only three of the 30-yard variety. QB Matthew Stafford has just three touchdown passes through the first four games. He had 11 through the first four games last season.

"We were having dinner the night before one of the games," Schwartz said, "and Scott said, 'Wow, have you seen that running back from Cal? Man, what I would do for a running back like that. He believes second-round selection WR Donnie Avery can help in that category. The Rams were tied for 30th in NFL in that category last season, averaging only 4.1 yards after each reception. Linehan said, "We're going to use this week as our first in-season schedule, kind of a mock game week schedule with our players. (We will) do an installation tomorrow and Wednesday-like format practice with both groups and special teams and we'll continue to do it that way. So tomorrow's Tuesday is like a Wednesday during the year, and then we'll do Wednesday like a Thursday and do Thursday like a Friday, and treat Friday like a Saturday." He wants the team to get accustomed to a more regular-season oriented schedule before the real thing starts.

A 21-yard run by Houston Texans RB Wali Lundy was one run Rams head coach Scott Linehan was upset with. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett attributed the miscue to an error in positioning by DL Victor Abeyanju. Haslett said, "We stopped the run with the first group pretty well. In retrospect, we tackled well but we didn't do a good job with alignments, getting aligned properly, the assignments weren't executed well. There weren't major breakdowns. It's going to be time consuming. That was a good test for us because that team is a lot like Denver."

Running backs coach Wayne Moses and wide receivers coach Henry Ellard worked sideline substitutions, something the team includes in practice during the week. In the coaches booth, offensive quality control coach Randy Hanson serves as Linehan's eyes in the sky. "He basically scouts me during the games, and gives all the tendencies on the play calls and what we're running out of this personnel grouping. It's actually uncanny, the information I get. It helps me in the mix of the play calls." Offensive coordinator Greg Olson provides information on field position, the spotting of the ball, and reminders about the game plan.

Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams RB Moe Williams (knee) had two physicals with the team. The first one wasn't clear, so they brought him in for a second one and he was able to pass that physical. He is recovering from micro-fracture surgery on his right knee, which was performed in November last year. Head coach Scott Linehan said Williams feels good and they feel he will be a "great addition" to the Rams. Williams will compete with RB Tony Fisher for the No. 2 running back position. Williams also brings the ability to play on special teams, according to Linehan.

The new coach plans to be in pads with full contact for a majority of the camp. Linehan wants his camp to be challenging and expects his players to improve in both mental and physical aspects of the game. "We're going to require a lot out of them as far as finding out how good a football team we are when it comes to tackling, being 'ball-secure,' being able to handle the adversity of the heat, and the soreness, and all that." The Miami Herald reports Miami Dolphins new offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey is going to run the same basic offense that former offensive coordinator Scott Linehan did last season. "The offense is going to be more controlled and more balanced," Miami Dolphins WR Chris Chambers said. "Linehan liked to go downfield a little bit more.
