Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner said the team is working with QB Brandon Weeden to play faster and make quicker decisions this season. Turner said Weeden has improved his footwork a lot this offseason and is working on improving his play under center.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said players eventually grew tired of former head coach Norv Turner's message and tuned him out. "I think we were just complacent," Mathews said. "The time that we spent there - we spent a lot of time there - it was the same thing over and over again. There wasn't anything new. I think he did everything he could to try to make us win no doubt about it. I just think we really got complacent to where we were and what we were doing and thought we were owed to win games." According to Mathews, talent has never been an issue for the team. "We all had the talent," Mathews said. "I think it was just going through the same routine, doing the same thing over and over again. You go there and you do what you gotta do to get ready for practice, go to practice, get out of practice. It was kind of just a routine thing, it wasn't something new. I think the new coaches being in here is going to be good for us."

"I saw a young guy that I think now and I thought then has a real positive upside and when I look at him on tape, I haven't spent any time with him, but when I look at the tape I see a guy who can be a really good player," Turner said. "I think a lot of playing quarterback has to do with the people you have around you and getting those guys playing at a high level. People may think it's being unfair to Brandon to say 'well they're being cool about it.' I think it's being fair to him to say 'hey we have a young guy that has some talent and we're going to find out about him.' We're going to coach him and do everything we can to make him the best player he can be and let's see where it goes. He's going to have an opportunity to go compete, play and grow and I'm excited to be working with him."

Mariucci has been out of coaching since being fired by the Detroit Lions in 2005. Spanos said he has not made a decision at this point and will evaluate their job statuses at the end of the season.

President Dean Spanos had decided about a month ago that Turner's time was up but only recently convinced himself to do the same with Smith. There will be no last-minute change of plans like before, according to a source close to Spanos' plans. Current director of player personnel Jimmy Raye is the favorite to take over as GM.

Turner said Gaither strained his groin a couple plays before giving up that sack and was hurting to such an extent that he had no business continuing to play. According to the head coach, it was Gaither's responsibility to signal to the sideline that he needed to come out, rather than try to tough it out. "He should have taken himself out," Turner said.
