Patrick McManamon, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon was fired Monday, Oct. 23. WKYC-TV's Jim Donovan first reported the story and said Carthon was told by head coach Romeo Crennel in a late afternoon meeting Monday he was being relieved of his duties. Offensive line coach Jeff Davidson appears to be inline as the next offensive coordinator, but no official announcement has been made.

"We're going to evaluate that and we'll see what happens," Crennel said. Offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon has been widely criticized for his play-calling this season and could receive help from assistant head coaches Jeff Davidson and Terry Robiskie.

Terry Pluto, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports former Cleveland Browns QB Trent Dilfer, traded to the San Francisco 49ers, did not think much of Browns' offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon's gruff personality, and even moreso, his unwillingness to allow a veteran quarterback much freedom to change the offense. No one can be sure, but these charges against Carthon have been whispered by other players. Like many young coaches, 2005 was Carthon's first season calling plays, he wanted to keep tight control on what his offense was doing.

Crennel said, "It's not all hunky-dory. Maurice is one of those hard-nosed, old-school coaches, and some guys have to get used to it." Crennel admitted he was not thrilled with having the NFL's lowest-scoring offense.

Carthon finished interviewing for the opening Wednesday, Jan. 11. "The main thing is that this is an opportunity for me and it's a great opportunity," said Carthon. "I think you have a chance to win here."

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Green Bay Packers have called Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon about their vacant head coaching position. Carthon was in the process of arranging an interview with the team this week. Carthon said Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 3, that he was excited about the chance to interview for the position. "In this business, you're always interested when someone might offer you a job," Carthon said. "The chance to be a head coach at a place with all that history and the things they've done, I'd love that opportunity. I've followed them for a lot of years."

Patrick McManamon, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel is standing behind offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon. Crennel said that when a play works it's a good call and when it doesn't it's not a good call. Crennel also said this week that he is not uncomfortable with the way Carthon has called plays, and he has no plans to bring in a new coordinator. The lack of audibles came to light after rookie QB Charlie Frye's first start against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was asked how much freedom he had to audible, and he said very little. Crennel had one of his direct answers when asked if he was concerned about the play-calling. "Nope," he said. Not at all? "Nope," he said.

"I'm out of the running," Carthon said when reached at his office at the Cowboys complex in Irving, Texas. "They're going to go in a different direction. Sean's (Payton) going to get that job. Associated Press reports newly named offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon will still handle the running backs coach duties. He will also assist head coach Marty Mornhinweg in the offensive play calling. Mornhinweg is expected to continue to call the majority, if not all, of the team's offensive plays.
