Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said he believes LB Sean Weatherspoon has plenty of room for improvement heading into the 2012 season. "He's a good player now, but he could be a lot better than he is," Nolan said. "And he will be. No question, because he loves football and he's exciting to watch and he's a playmaker, for all those reasons. But he's done well, but he can still do a lot better. I'm not just saying that because that's the blanket statement for people, but as I'm watching him, he's got a lot of upside, so as much good as you've seen, he's got a lot of good in there going forward."

Dolphins | Mike Nolan wants attacking defense

Sat, 29 May 2010 04:22:37 -0700

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said he wants his unit to have an aggressive mentality this upcoming season, according to Jeff Darlington, of the Miami Herald. "I would like to think we're offensive - not defensive,'' Nolan said. Nolan doesn't want his players protecting their end of the football field, which requires a defensive mentality. He wants big plays and suffocating pressure from all areas of the field. "On defense, when Mike talks about being offensive, he talks about setting the pace and dictating to the offense more as opposed to the other way around,'' head coach Tony Sparano said. "So becoming offensive on defense is something that our kids are learning right now."

49ers | Nolan would like league to change pass interference rule

Mon, 19 Mar 2007 07:44:35 -0700

ESPN.com reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan would like to see the National Football League adopt a new pass interference rule that allows officials some leeway in handing out punishment. Nolan's plan would enable officials to determine whether a penalty should result in a 15-yard infraction or a spot of the foul penalty. Nolan believes offensive coaches around the league currently call plays with the purpose of drawing a penalty. "You'll see them drop back and throw it vertical," Nolan said. "They'll overthrow the play; they just want the penalty." The current rules state that a defensive pass interference penalty rewards the offense with the ball at the spot of the foul or at the one yard line if the infraction occurs in the end zone.

Young is believed to be contemplating a return for another season. Young, who is expected to have a reduced role next season, would likely have to play at a reduced salary in 2007, as he has earned $4.25 million or more in each of the past six seasons. "I got a positive read after the season that he was excited about coming back," head coach Mike Nolan said. "Now his role would have to change and he understands that. It would've been different this past year, but we had no depth. It was difficult. He takes more reps than I would like for him to take right now, but that's the best we got."
