The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan was 18-37 during his tenure with the team. Nolan has the lowest winning percentage (.327) among any San Francisco coaches who made it through more than one season with the team.

Updating a previous item, Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan was fired late Monday, Oct. 20. It is assumed defensive coordinator Mike Singletary will take over coaching duties. Earlier reports said Nolan would be fired after the Week 8 game, but ownership instead decided not to wait.

Daniel Brown, of The Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan denies criticizing QB Alex D. Smith in a SI.com interview. Nolan was quoted as saying of QB J.T. O'Sullivan, "Thus far J.T.'s been better than the other two (Smith and Shaun Hill), and there hasn't really been much of a gray area. His play's been better at the position than what we've had at any point in the last three years.'' Nolan said he was referring to the general quarterback play and not specifically O'Sullivan.

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said the team has decided who will start the team's preseason game against the Oakland Raiders Friday, Aug. 8, but would not say who it was. Nolan said he expects all three quarterbacks to play with the starter receiving 12 to 15 plays and the No. 2 and No. 3 QBs to play the rest of the game.

Nolan did rule out the possibility of the team selecting a running back or a quarterback in the first two rounds. He stressed that offensive line, defensive line, linebacker and cornerback were possibilities, but offensive line and linebacker are the team's most pressing needs in the draft.
